Days of seeing people totally forseeably needing rescuing from flooded cars, blown over lorries, roads totally jammed with traffic...

Cyclists still getting around fine and that is just crazy...

Not entirely new. I believe RRA record chasers used to wait for the strong tail winds.
e.g. Ray Booty

From wikpedia:-
The straight-out record[edit]
In September Booty attempted the 100-mile (160 km) record under Road Records Association(RRA) rules. These allowed him to take advantage of tailwinds and gradient drop (time trials in the UK must be on out-and-back courses). He recorded 3h 28m 40s. For the event he used a Sturmey-Archer hub gear

Once upon a time I commuted in wellies in knee deep snow. Foolhardy, but driven by economic necessity and lack of public transport.

Whilst they are probably not breaking any laws (was there some sort of curfew?) it seems a we bit stupid and selfish.

Hurricanes? Pathetic. In the old days they did this sort of wind assisted boosting properly.

To be boring, I doubt you would get a KOM in those conditions. Gusts and eddies that would take you off the bike would scare you from going too fast.
