WhatsApp  - no worries, I'm even less clued up on the darned phones and their apps.

Fwiw, the kids wanted me on it; I'm on it; it has the accesses it asked for (I think); and I've had no issues.

But you'd be a darned great fool to trust that as a recommendation! I'm just waiting with trepidation to hear what the experts say

WhatsApp is a very popular and stable app (I use it as do a lot of my business contacts) so I wouldn't worry too much about providing your info. It's free anyway so there's no payment issue

Another + for Whatsapp, I've used it to keep in touch with my daughter when she was travelling around South America via messaging and calls. One of the most used apps on my phone.

It's a great app and very secure. It is also totally free now so no need to pay a penny but I believe you may need to still put in you card details on the app store (apple or Google play) again both are secure and I have never had any issue.

If making calls from the app do it via wifi as it can be data heavy plus the connection should be stronger and more reliable as well.

Now free and encrypted (already said upthread) - wasn't until recently. Even better. The good bit about whatsapp is the stability and simplicity. I found the audio quality better than adequate - this isn't necessarily the case with other messaging systems or apps.

We use it as a family, for keeping up with each other (strung out around the country/globe at this moment in time). We have a family 'group' set up. We also have another group with in-laws, cousins etc. And I message my youngsters individually too. Haven't used it for calls tho, as facetime normally does the biz there.
You can also use WhatsAppweb for quicker message typing on your PC or laptop, and I've found a reasonable ipad workaround too (can't remember the name of this right now).
Thoroughly recommended by me. :okay:
