A mate of mine, who was involved in marine research back in the day was very scathing on "dolphin friendly tuna" as a concept. He quite logically argued that we should be eating "tuna friendly dolphin" instead ie preserving the declining tuna and eating the more plentifull dolphins. Environmentalism shouldn't really be about cudliness of animals. Not sure I'd personally be keen on killing dolphins to eat, but it was a good challenge to woolly thinking

I'm not denying that sonar might be a factor, but whales were running themselves ashore long before submarines. Here's a Dutch one in 1601. At the time, such events were seen as an indication of God's displeasure.
