I am uneasy about carrying anything too hard or pointed in jersey pockets, just in case. I know one rider who wrecked his back after falling on his mobile phone. Cake should be OK though .
2 x inner tubes
1 x multitool (includes tyre levers and chain break tool)
1 x puncture repair kit (glue & patches)
1 x spare chain link
1 x £20
6 x cable ties
1 x rubber 'boot' (incase of sidewall split)
1 x small tube of chain lube (think hotel toothpaste tube size)
I also carry my mobile and a bank card in a waterproof pocket.
Both my bikes have separate toolkits (as one uses 23c tyres, the other 35c tyres) so I don't have to chop and change. Both bikes have a mini pump attached to the bottle mount.

For commuting; most of it goes on my back but the saddle bag contains.

I usually carry a spare rear light when commuting, but for some reason it wasn't in my saddle bag the other night when the one on the bike made a bid for freedom - luckily, I was able to retrieve it before it got run over but I've made sure the spare is in there in case of future occasions when I'm not so lucky.
