In 2004, Blackpool tourism chief tried and failed to get an airshow every single day from Easter to August bank holiday... his reasoning for the hugely expensive endeavour was "if they're all looking up, the tourists won't realise how sh!t Blackpool is." They also have a firework festival.

Ive only been to Blackpool once,a dark Autumnal night about 20 years ago.I went with a University friend who was doing an errand for an elderly neighbour.Whilst she did this,I stood on the beach,gazing out to sea(I wasnt keen on the landward view)when I was approached by a kindly Bobby who asked what I was doing.I explained that Id only been there a few minutes and that shortly we d be back off to Staffordshire.He laughed and told me that he was worried that I was off on a one way sea voyage and that where I was standing was a favourite place for suicides.Given the time Id been there,he reckoned Id have been the quickest visitor suicide in history!Nice chap and funny,he pointed us to a superb Chip shop!Never been back!

Blackpool went downhill when the hoteliers and guest house owners thought "What can we do to have an all round income and not just one from April to September"?
So they decided to rent their rooms out to DSS "guests". That's when the decline started.

I spent a love-sick night at the end of Blackpool Pier, a pint of Double Diamond in my hand, having said goodbye to a wonderful seventeen year old girl earlier in the day at Heathrow. I was just eighteen.
I don't have any fond feelings about Blackpool at all...and the B&B was sh1te.

BTW, don't ever try and cross tram lines at an angle less than 40 degrees unless you like road rash.

I wouldn't be keen though!

The last time I was in Blackpool was about 25 years ago; we drank to extreme excess, got a curry, and then climbed over the barbed wire to sit and eat it in Bloomfield Road; the beer was pish, the curry worse but it was cool sitting in the football ground. We fell asleep and managed to get out without having to try to re-negotiate the barbed wire as some old blokes (maybe the groundsmen?) arrived and opened a gate.

Went there for a day trip in 1980. Never been back. No intention of going back. Ever.

Loads of ill behaved drunks, noisy and foul mouthed groups (hens and stags?), no half decent food to be found.

Gave up and went to Fleetwood which had wonderful fish and chips on sale I recall, then on to Morecombe. Both of those were worth a visit.

In that case it would make sense, but there is a road and then there are the tram lines, you can't drive on them and there are signs a plenty encouraging care when crossing.
I always thought, mostly because people on here say so, that you could cycle down the prom. But its difficult enough to walk through the crowds on a busy day, visitors obviously haven't taken heed of the cyclechat reviews!

We were in Blackpool over the weekend for the airshow. Who knew my 10 year old would have a complete meltdown over the noise and have to be taken back to the b&b to hide under the bed?!
Anyway, as I was removing her swiftly from the situation we were almost hit by a pair of cyclists who were using the tramlines as a cycle lane, but then had to get out of the way of the tram and we were on the pavement that they wanted to escape to.
They weren't the only ones though. Cyclists of all denominations were using the tramlines, not always in the same direction as the trams either.
People of Blackpool, is this a thing?
It seemed incredibly dangerous to me.

Okay so i live in Lytham which is a 10 minute cycle from blackpool so i cycle along the prom alot! I use the Tram lines alot due to the pedestrians having no idea that your bearing down on them at 25mph and then when you getting directly behind you they start screaming abuse; As for the airshow... I was there, attending on my bike and i was cycling on the tram lines due to the ridiculous amounts of people that were attending! I even asked the police if it was alright to do so and they told me its fine and that the tram lines are built into the footpath. It is only ADVISED not to cycle on the tram track for the obvious reason.. P.S. Tourists in blackpool are stupid and have no respect for cyclists on the prom.

Since the prom is a shared use path... don't you think 25mph is a bit extreme, ignorant, antisocial, etc...? if you want to ride at 'car' speed, then use the road.
