I got a gift of a few hundred quids worth of Halfords vouchers so I bought an Ultegra groupset to upgrade from 105. Apart from the bling factor and getting more waves from passing cyclists, I really can't say that there's any difference and my average speed hasn't changed.

My turn - this for full retail price. I'd driven Bolletta and friend to Thorpe Park with the intention of dropping them off and hitting the Surrey Hills for the afternoon except when I got my kit out I'd realised I'd not packed any of my many jerseys, so I had to do a j+1 in Guildford.

Nah its necessary (at a basic level a road bike isn't necessary for cycling but if you want to go fast it is) and a 5th of the price of their competitors.

Exactly! I've bought many things that would probably be construed as unnecessary by most people (mainly purple bits for my bike - today's purchase was some purple jockey wheels, and I've got silly things like matching cable ends, too), but they're totally necessary...

A Chain cleaning tool from Parktools with integrated magnet. Used it once, made a huge mess everywhere. It was utter crap and its been sitting in a carton in the basement ever since.

Everything I have ever bought was completely necessary, as were the ones that replaced it.

BTW; Am I the only person who has found that the chain cleaners work? Fill it with WD40 and it works a treat to get the crap off and it's a lot easier to degrease WD than chain lube. That's my 2p!

Yup, that was the one I was going to add.

During an incident I'm too busy taking preventative action to use it (plus my voice is loud) and firing it immediately after the danger has passed does nothing to contribute to safety, and everything to raise my adrenaline even higher. Gave it away to a colleague.
