I was hoping to set it up today but Amazon cocked up the delivery of the Thunderbolt cable. I have cancelled the original order and reordered. Hopefully all will be well second time round!
The replacement cable did arrive today. I can't get a connection though. I don't know if the cable is faulty or if there is another problem. I suspect the cable... ho hum!
I will stop for something to eat then get back to checking it out later...
... and eventually I got it to work! I really thought that the cable was faulty, but it turned out that RetinaRelay had chosen a particular Thunderbolt port and was ignoring the others. As soon as I moved the cable to the port of choice, the connection sprang into life.
I am very impressed with this software solution. I will try to check a few technical issues tomorrow, but for now it works fantastically well. I played a 2k HDR video at 60 fps on the extension iMac screen with no noticeable juddering. There was also good sync between sound and picture. I played some videos of drummers and the sticks looked like they were hitting the drums at exactly the right moments.
Jobs for tomorrow...
- Set the Magic Mouse up to work on the MacBook. It will automatically work on the iMac screen too once that has been done. [PS Done! I discovered that the USB dongle for my battered old Logitech mouse also works on the iMac so I have that mouse to use on the iMac when the MacBook is not connected to it.]
- Get the MacBook sound to play through the iMac speakers. The laptop sounds really good for a laptop, but the iMac sounds excellent for a 'monitor' so I want to make the most of that. [PS - now working after trying various things suggested by a Google AI searchbot.]
