He's abandoned the vuelta due to 'injuries' He'd probably of been suspended of racing in the next week anyway.

I'm not doubting that he's got injuries, but that's not the sole reason for his retirement, he would of been booted out very soon anyway.

The description of his injuries alone and the added complications would be enough to rule him out of the race (In my opinion)

If he is worried about the CONI investigation and the Benucci allegations - surely abandoning the race would be an admission of guilt to some extent

It looked bad enough after his crash, his shorts weren't doing a good job at hiding what looked like a painful open wound on his right buttock. The day after the crash, he started the race but abandoned because it was too painful/uncomfortable to continue.

He's already admitted to being worried about possible sanctions in interviews during the Vuelta - why do these things take so long to resolve? But he abandoned because of injuries - nothing else.
