What's What's app?

I suppose it's all part of getting older but I don't understand what What's app is. What does it do that a text ,phone call or even messenger can't do? I've asked my daughter who says its quicker but surely messenger is instant.
Any ideas?

Think of it as free text/media messages. It uses your data plan rather than text/mms.

Fantastic.
Faster because it reduces the file size as it sends.
Free for the first year, then about 69p per yesr
Let's you share pictures, video, links and text so easily.
Let's you make phone calls, all still free, even across the world (we were speaking with our daughter on what's app while she was in Nicaragua!)
A great way to share stuff in a group. We have a staff what's app group to make our well earned and occasional social arrangements easy)
Uses very little band with.

It's the only way I can communicate with my kids. No 1 son is working in Belize and I love the way you can see when he was last online - it's nice to know he's about even if he's not messaging us.

Don't tell him that you're stalking him, you can turn off that feature!

To expand on that, many/most tarrifs charge you for sending pictures by text, even if you have a zillion "free" texts as part of your deal. Send them by whatsap and it uses a smidgeon of your data allowance. And none of it if you're connected by wifi.

My grandchildren tell me I have to have all these so called good things if I want to have street cred. So I download, snap chat, whats ap and a multitude of other things. Snap chat is rubbish, and i suspect whats ap is as well. I do have hangouts, and Skype though.

Ok but indulge me.
My daughter is going to the USA next week. As long as she can get WiFi,Messenger will send photos,text,I can create groups on it and I can call her on it. So why would I use What's App which so far as I can see does exactly the same.
I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on some great new thing or is it just another one of many apps that do similar things that comes down to personal preference?

I agree with you about snap chat. Whats app is better than hangouts though.

My sisters etc. who are lost to Apple rubbish use Whats App.

Kids use Steam and Skype and the Apple instant thingy (my daughter is Apple - the rest Android)
