I'll let someone else do the full calculation..
The supermarket transport depot I work at a couple of days a week has 120 tractor units running at approximately 10 mpg.
They go out with different drivers two or three times per 24 hours 7 days a week and refuelled each time with, on average, 100 litres of diesel.
Fuel is slightly cheaper than garage prices but still going up in price.

Plus the refrigerated trailers use normal diesel (red diesel is now banned)

No wonder the cost of shopping is going to go up!

I get that to £57,600 per day, at 1,60 per litre for fuel alone, then you have to allow for the drivers wages, maintenance, M.OT's, insurance, tractor unit rental (I'm sure they're on long term hire these days) trailer rental too, then add into the mix all the forklifts, Order Picker & Electric Pallet trucks (One site I go to has 200 forklifts of various types on long term rental) which need charging up or a fill up of LPG to keep them going, plus on site engineers to service & repair them, as well as a garage for HGV repairs, you can see how this is starting to mount up to eye watering levels, then repeat for each regional distribution centre they have!

Shell are always the dearest round here. There’s a spread of £1.429 to £1.529 for petrol within three miles of here. Diesel is £1.675 to £1.809.

After out trip out yesterday I decided to fill up on the way to Tesco

Esso was 144.9
as I was getting to Tesco I saw then changing the price of diesel on the display but left petrol at 141.99

so I tried ASDA - which was 143.99

so I went back to Tesco and got it there

Topped "Van Diesel" up today near work. Only because we have a trip this weekend and I got £30 squids in to fill, at 45p more a squid litre than I filled up before this shenanigans. I've not used it much. Not really an issue for us as we don't drive much, so £5-£10 on a 300 mile trip means nothing really. MrsF avoiding driving currently (petrol) .... hmmmmm.
