Remotes are "buttons" to the kids (as in "Don't touch the buttons") or oojit-wotsits (accompanied with simulated pressing-of-buttons-in-mid-air) for the grown ups in our house.
Can't think of any made-up words that I use on a regular basis though, sadly.
