Sign up to a friendly web community, the advice you'll find there will prove invaluable and...

oh wait....

Seriously tho, you've made the most important descicion in asking advice, it took me a while to do the same thing and I am a different rider because of the insights gained from this forum, plus there are one or two pretty decent types skulking about these pages (you'll have to search hard to find them though...most of them are a bunch of helmet-less splitters..."ducks")

Don't get competitive with other cyclists - there are a lot who IMO take too much risk - do you own thing that you are comfortable with.

I thought that was part of a males genetic coding. I have been able to do that for as long as I can remember.

I only ever have to clear my left nostril. No idea why.

FFS, check that there are no other cyclists likely to get hit with your snot rocket before doing so.

Next cyclist to hit me with a bodily fluid gets decked.

Don't ponce about...read this. Look after your own life, and forget your pride.

"Here lies the body of Michael O'Day,
who died maintaining the right of way.
He was right, dead right, as he sailed along,
but he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong."

Slow down to offer help to fellow commuters with punctures or mechanicals, provided you are prepared to make good on the offer that is.

It amazes me how uplifying it is to be offered help when things have gone awry.

It also amazes me how few riders do so.

To this day I've never accepted an offer and never had one accepted, but it always makes me smile through the rain, grease, crushed fingertips and grit when someone asks...

I do sometimes ask but I just know that if I give up a spare tube, the fairy will be waiting around the corner for me and I'll have to walk to work!

Carry the number of a taxi company that can carry your bike. Then if you get a mechanical you can call them up and do the repair in the relaxed comfort of your office or home rather than in the rain at the side of the road. It happens rarely enough that I feel fully justified in calling a cab when I do get a puncture or mechanical.

Oh, and read Cyclecraft.

ooh that's good advice re' the taxi! i've often wondered what cab firms would take me + my bike and have never bothered to find out - consider that your good deed for the day
