Pedestrians etc will always dive left or right - aim right for them!

Are you a Bristolin with a motorised bike

Im taking the piss - although there is a serious note there - also works with wildlife.

Lets keep this thread on track...

Keep your tyres pumped and chain lubed.

Carry at least one spare tube, a decent pump and spare light batteries.

Take your time

I set off a little earlier so I can commute not race, saves arriving in a puddle of sweat and I'm in a good mood (on the way back you may have other ideas lol!)
That's just so wrong !
The fast guys don't race, they are raced by people trying to look quick...... and failing.

I'm overtaken 3 or 4 times/week... however without increasing my effort level I almost always overtake them again. I can count on one hand how many people in the past 2-3 years have had the strength to stay ahead of me for more than 90 seconds.

Hehe ok tip 2 to expand this - I love 'slow racing'

Go at your pace, not slow just comfortable, and catch all the racers who have blazed past you at the lights/obstructions along the way where they are stuck and chuckle*

On the way home though my legs are pumping! :becool:

*No disrespect to anyone who does go fast or RLJs to get away from me!

I'd say worry about getting to work far more than you worry about how fast you might get there. Take it easy, there's lots of quiet empty roads at the weekend for racing along.

Thanks everyone - I've learnt more from this thread than anything else I've been reading out there!!

What I've learnt from this:

1. Enjoy it and worry less about the fastest time - being safe and having a fun ride is more important than shaving off 2 minutes

2. I had pretty much got the clothes sorted but this has helped confirm it.

3. I thought I had everything needed for emergencies (pump, puncture repair, money, phone) but since reading I will get spare inner tube and spare batteries. I also have mini first adi kit although nobody yet has mentioned this.

4. Since starting, I have tried to be curteous and give good signals, as well as positioning myself in the right place. Since reading this, it has confirmed my reasons for doing so and will help me more concious of making sure I do.

4. I've just bought cyclecraft and will read through it this weekend

5. I also now know I'll never be alble to ride past a bus stop without feeling slightly smug as this never occured to me before!!

Many thanks - been very useful ut keep them coming.

Spare inner tube is the only way to go. Trying to stick a little rubber patch on the inner tube in pouring rain sucks. Just bang in the fresh tube (after making sure whatever caused the puncture has been removed) and away you go, worry about fixing the inner tube later in comfort.
