Change your route after you have been doing it a while when you are not pressed for time. It's amazing what parts of a town/city you can discover on a daily commute

Keep a track of your leg diameter, weight, average speed and travel spend from day 1.

When you are feeling down (figuratively or literally), look at how much better your legs are, how much weight you have lost, and how much your average speed is, and you'll be back on your bike again soon.

Money is a problem one. You'll need to add fiddle factors like Gym membership, Slimming club membership, costs of other interests/hobbies that have been supplanted by your cycling in order to show that it is cheaper than that new bike, new kit, gadgets for bike, upgrades for bike, bike magazine subscriptions, etc, etc, etc,

Always remember that every other road user is a blind, deaf, psycopath with an active desire to kill you and only the most rudimentary control over their vehicle.

It's possibly not 100% true, but treat them like it is and you'll be that little bit safer.

Small tip - but quite important - wear glasses, or you'll be forever fishing flies out of your eyes. Otherwise take a small mirror. I've had flies/blades of grass in my eyes, not nice! It can really hurt, especially if its a large insect that goes in at full speed!

A very good tip indeed.

If morale is low, look at the faces of the people waiting at bus stops.

Edit: Oh, and watch all episodes of Gaz's Silly Cyclists series.

+1

I learned more from watching these videos than any other single thing. There's now about two and a half hours of cyclists doing silly things, and they teach you a lot about the risks of certain types of cycling / maneuvres. Highly recommended, since you won't necessarily see this yourself for some time.
