Wheel Change - Spacer Required?

This afternoon, I fitted some lovely new Easton EA50 Aeros to my Trek 2.3. The wheels are a direct replacement for the standard Bontrager Race wheels that came with the bike.

When I installed the cassette onto the new Eastons, I originally installed it with the 1mm spacer that was fitted to the Bontrager hub. However, with the spacer fitted, the final cog was too far out for the lockring threads to engage. With the 1mm spacer removed, the lockring engages fine and tightens down.

Is it normal that the spacer is only required with certain hubs? This is probably a daft question - but the first time I have swapped a cassette onto an alternative wheel so just wonder if I have done something stupid?

You are fine.

A 10spd cassette is slightly thinner than 8 / 9 spd so you need the spacer on 8 / 9 hubs.


Your new wheels are 10spd compatible so no need for the spacer.

As long as the cassette is held securely in place and the lockring engages with by a few mm, you'll be fine. There is very little sideways load on your cassette anyway, the vast majority of force is taken by the splines interlocking on the cassette and freehub.

Chances are your previous freehub was a standard hyperglide, your new one is a hyperglide-compact.

Thanks so much for the replies - I really appreciate that.

I did wonder if the issue is the Hyperglide / Hyperglide C thing. It all feels very secure and even the indexing was pretty much spot on without adjustment so think I was probably worrying unnecessarily.
