If i try to park my car in a private place and there is a sign saying i will get clamped, i risk getting clamped so yes i have to park half a mile down the road. As cyclists we bang on about having the same rights as motorists on the road, the same applies we should not be exempt from clamping because we are on a bike.

From this i gather you do not drive. Ive lost count of the amount of parking fines ive had, always my own mistake thinking i can park somewhere whilst i run to the shop for 5 minutes, come back with a nice little yellow and black sleeve under my window wiper with another fine inside. But that is the point, i knew the risk and can accept it. You seem to be taking a "I am cyclist how dare they do this to me" attitue.

Most clamping is done on private property rather than government/council, since these people are clamping your vehicle i would assume by law they are able to do so, so long as there is adequate signage.

No there is still legislation on clamping even if on private land. You seem to forget that a) it didnt happen to myself and  a peice pf paper stuck to a bike may blow off - that is not adequate signage. I think its a little unfair to accuse myself of an attitude on that basis.

When you were clamped, or fined - did you investigate - or blindly pay up? People get conned everyday like that and regardless of whether you thought you were in the wrong you should always check.

Maybe you don't have that attitude i meant the OP. Yes i paid up, once when i was clamped i tried taking it off and not long after the police arrived since the security guard watching the cameras must have reported me. If private clamping wasn't legal the police wouldn't of been there telling me off would they?

There have been instances where the Police have turned up to assist and the clamp has been improperly applied, and in turn damaged the car. The Police can actually intervene too if the clampers have been naughty, lack of signs and road markings being incorrect.

In Scotland clamping is illegal, full stop. It's been considered extortion. About time the law was changed in England. Don't care about Wales - not since being called mochyn sais by Welsh arsonist sympathisers:smile:

I feel the 'man in the street' wouldn't regard this as good use of police time, and following Nortones2's comment, isn't it about time clamping was outlawed in England too? There will always be people who park where they shouldn't, but is clamping really the best way of dealing with them if it degenerates into involving the police?

As for 'clamping' bikes, it seems a very heavy-handed way of dealing with the underlying problem of insufficient dedicated bike parking.
