When do you put your Xmas decorations up?

23rd December (minimalistic) and really only for Mum who lives with us. They come down on the 27th which in our book is when Christmas finishes. I/we have only considered 24th, 25th and 26th to be the days of Christmas. Unlike retailers who prefer you to have 3-4 months. Town decorations went up and the beginning of November. And as for the Christmas music that is played everywhere you go … sigh; play something decent if you must, not all these rap type Christmas 'tunes.'

As Private Eye says; "remember, Christmas is for months, not just for Christmas!"

Ditto. In fact, I have the most minimal Christmas and New Year that I can without upsetting people too much. It's a balancing act. I wouldn't actually 'do' those 'celebrations' at all but people get really funny when you tell them that you'd rather not see them until January or February!

They see a fun, exciting time; I see OTT commercialism and hype. I try to be nice to people all year round and enjoy myself when I can, not when somebody tells me that I should, especially when it happens to coincide with some of my worst times with S.A.D.!

If I could afford it and I didn't have to consider other people's feelings, I'd take my bike to somewhere warm like Tenerife and ride in the sunshine from mid-December to mid-January!

(Having said all of that ... I'll switch my avatar to the Santa hat one in mid-December!)

Ours go up the weekend before my birthday. Like Colin I just do enough to keep the family happy, if I was on my own I wouldn't put them up and I would be off somewhere sunny for Xmas week.

Usually around the middle of December, depending what day of the week Xmas day falls on.

I can't get my head around decorations being up when it's not even December!

So no-one is going to be doing their bike up like this then?

How strictly do you enforce the "No Christmas stuff until after my birthday!" rule (born 5th December)
LOL

Not that much - it was just a family tradition, my birthday was on the 7th so on the 8th we would go out and get a tree. Now i’ve got children of my own we seem to have kept to the 8th or later rule. It is interesting that, when I was at school (70’s and 80’s) the trees seemed to be on sale from around the beginning of December, now it’s a lot earlier – a kind of Christmas creep... oh well, remember Christmas is for months, not just for Christmas

having had crap Christmasses as a kid and adult until 1999 (1998 was the last crap one) i was always reluctant to do decorations at home and was still a bit bah humbug until Christmas 2009. something clicked that year and i got all festive very early on and as soon as Dec 1st arrived the decs went up. we will be putting ours up this weekend after the stair carpet gets fitted and we have returned from loft conversion mayhem back to normality.

Looking out of the window (down 'ere in Chavdon, sarf Lundun init) there are already a few houses with the regulation - migrane inducing - external lights, and plastic Santa/reindeer/snowperson installed, and switched on.
I reckon, if the government extend the Christmas period from say November through to March, councils could save a fortune in street lighting.
