Spring is coming and yesterday I jumped the gun and went without leggings and long sleeves. Made it through the ride; yet noticed my knee a little and some muscle tightness.

The Italian cycling manual, CONI, used to say 70 or 60 degrees for covering up the legs (I forget which one). The sun is a factor and so is our individual tolerance.

What personal signs do you go by when deciding to shed some clothing right before the ride?

When it's warm enough for me. Simple as that. There's no science to it.

I heard someone once say no knees below 10 degrees. Or was it 5. Can't remember. Either way, I'll be going from tights to legwarmers soon in anticipation!

I can see an outdoor thermometer and a windmill from my house, plus I know roughly which jackets and raincoats "work" in which temperatures, so I decide between those and the look of the sky and whether sun or rain seems likely.

As I get older, my knees stay covered for longer, and not just for aesthetic reasons.

10 degrees is my limit for shorts, which makes for a fun commute when it's 7 degrees on the way in and 12 on the way home- the beauty of leg warmers.

There's nothing macho about wearing shorts before everyone else.

For me it is roughly:
<0 Celsius - Long bibs
0-8 Celsius - leg warmers
8-13 Celsius - knees warmers
13+ Celsius - bibs shorts only

For the few rides less than a hour - then whatever shorts I can find that are clean.

70 or 60 degrees would scorch the skin completely off wouldnt it?

Above 10 is enough to start removing winter gear.
