6th January. Have them down by the end of Wednesday.

It's not difficult. Start with 26th Dec, and count 12 days.

Ours always come down on New Year Day. Had enough of them by then and its a reminder that holidays are over ;)

6th! Don't know why it's supposed to be unlucky, my neighbour went frantic when she saw a bit of tinsel I'd forgotten last year!

I only have cards up on ribbons anyway. I did think I'd have some lovely holly berries from my mum's tree but (a) it snowed when I was going to cut it and (;) it would have deprived the birds of some food.

Took the tree down tonight - we are busy tomorrow and cannot do it then. The room looks quite bare without the lovely tree.

DECORATIONS:

The placing of a ring of Holly on doors originated in Ireland as Holly was one of the main plants that flourished at Christmas time and which gave the poor ample means with which to decorate their dwellings.

All decorations are traditionally taken down on Little Christmas (January 6th.) and it is considered to be bad luck to take them down beforehand.

Little Christmas, or Nollaig Bheag in Irish, is one of the traditional names in Ireland for January 6, more commonly known in the rest of the world as the Celebration of the Epiphany. It is so called because it was the day on which Christmas Day was celebrated under the Roman calendar, before the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. It is the traditional end of the Christmas season and the last day of the Christmas holidays for both primary and secondary schools in Ireland.

The name Little Christmas is also found other languages including Slovene (mali Božič), Galician (Nadalinho), and Ukrainian.

[edit] Women's Christmas
Little Christmas is also called Women's Christmas (Nollaig na mBan in Irish), and sometimes Women's Little Christmas. The tradition, still very strong in Cork is so called because of the Irish men taking on all the household duties for the day. Most women hold parties or go out to celebrate the day with their friends, sisters, mothers, and aunts. Bars and restaurants serve mostly women and girls on this night. Children often buy presents for their mothers and grandmothers.

While originally a rural tradition, Women's Christmas is enjoying something of a revival, both in Ireland and abroad.

25th Dec (Christmas day) is the first day, 6th Jan (Epiphany) is the 13th day and 10th Jan is the last day of Christmas (this year). When you take your decorations down is up to you, but ours will probably come down sometime between the Epiphany and the last day of Christmas.
