What was a usual sight at this time of year when i was growing up... I can't really remember the last time i saw a 'guy' and a bunch of kids asking for a penny. At a guess, very early nineties for me.

It was only this BBC article that made me think of 'penny for the guy'. So when was the last time you heard it? If at all.

Really can't remember last time I heard it. Many, many years ago.
I guess it's one of those things that has fallen by the wayside now that Halloween trick or treating has taken over for that time of year.

Still goes on in the time warp that are some of the less desirable areas around here, but these days it's a "tenner bag for the guy"!

I heard it just over a week ago. Two youngster had made a decent guy and had parked themselves outside a convenience store that I sometimes call in at on my way home. I hadn't seen a penny for the guying for quite a while and I gave them fifty pence. They were very polite and thanked me when I made my way out.

A few days ago. Odd situation. Little lad, no more than 5 years old with a 'guy' next to him. 'Penny for the guy' at every passer by. The crazy thing was his mum was sat there as well ? WTF. Weird !

I remember when I lived in Ayrshire a few years back that the local kids did Bonfire Night, and Halloween come to think of it, quite well compared to the nonsense that goes on round here.

I also think I may know some of the "less desirable" area you mean. :hyper:

Unfortunately that would involve youngsters going out, maybe in the dark, on their own. Much safer for them to be at home playing GTA 5 or similar on the Xbox etc etc.
Last time I saw it, outside the local corner shop in about '88.

About 7 years ago I made a guy and put it in the littlest's pushchair and raised some money for the playgroup.
None of the children knew what it was and a few of the parents were puzzled but we raised more than a few pennies.
