HMV and Virgin seem to only stock mainstream rubbish, and i've not joined the ipod generation.

Play or Amazon - but better still if you can swallow your pride get them out from the library (most libraries in the country can order any CDs that are released). Hire charges will probably only be between 50p and £1...

You're not Insecure, Pressursed, Over-taxed and Debt-riden? Good for you!

I'd recommend Play too.

Amazon.co.uk, Play.com or CD-WOW.com are ridiculously cheap and free delivery on everything.

Melvil is spot on about the library. For a fiver a week I can own 5 cd's temporarily. They have to wait a couple of months for new releases but I've had some corkers out of there recently - things I wouldn't have thought about getting if paying top whack.

If you are trying to avoid 'mainstream rubbish', you could shop with Rough Trade.

If you really, really want to avoid 'mainstream rubbish', I recommend CD-Baby. I love their ethos - [In•de•pen•dent: (adj.) Not having sold one's life, career, and creative works over to a corporation.]!

I'll second CDBaby. Many of the bands I podcast have albums for sale there. (Robin Tymm, Phideaux, Hungry Lucy, Freddy, Papermoon to name but a few).

I see people buying from play.com.
Personally I use I tunes , just about anything you could want and non of the clutter of of cds. I know people have problems with the protection applied to their stuff but I honestly never notice, I buy it, it goes on the Ipod , I listen, seem ok to me. ;):biggrin::biggrin:

I kind of have a 'principle' about online stores like itunes...they supply only information that is restricted. They don't sell a 'product' with a case, a booklet etc...something you can hold in your hands. It seems a bit rubbish and they must be making money hand over fist...

Think I read about 75p of the 79p track price goes to the record companies or something stupid like that. ;)

Their despatch email amused me when I first ordered from them:

"Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with
sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure
it was in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over
the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money
can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party
marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of
Portland waved 'Bon Voyage!' to your package, on its way to you, in
our private CD Baby jet on this day, Monday, July 3rd."
