I was happily climbing up to the start of a minor hill road today when I found the road closed signs. Thankfully, someone from the council was there and told me I could pass with caution. A landslip had taken the road two miles further up the valley.

News to me though. The road is a minor one with no number. But it is also very popular and pushed like mad as it is leading into a new national park and visitor centre. I passed the landslip which I guess will take a six figure sum to repair.....at least.

But is there anywhere on the net giving info on closed roads, small or big ?

The council website would be the best chance, I guess, although in my experience they are not always up to date.

Loch Thom to Inverkip?

Been a bonus since they shut that to vehicular traffic. You can get a good speed going downhill to Inverkip without having to worry about cars coming the other way (it's single track). The guy with the wee cafe in the bothy at Cornalees will be happy that they're actually getting round to fixing it at last!

Yes, but the opposite direction. I guess that is not an easy repair as it require a support wall. It does not look safe now for bikeriders either. I had a look at the Inverclyde council website and found nothing.

The visitor centre is very good though and the new national park deserve more support. Hereby given.

I passed that same spot last weekend, they were working on it and i had to get off and lift my bike over a pile of trees they were clearing. I did have to stop earlier on though as someone on a 4x4 came past me, i think it was the farmer. He managed to squeeze past the bit of road that has disappeared, looked a bit dodgy to me.

Inverclyde council are hopeless, not surprising their web site showed no info regarding the road.

In almost all cases I have come across, roads closed for planned repairs (as opposed to landslips like the one above) are passable for cyclists and pedestrians. It's only the cars that have to take a a different route.

Usually. Even if it means carrying the bike between a wall and site fencing.

Only ever once turned back and that was the CC ride to Jodrell in April - cyclist came past saying road was closed, no way through, so we thought better of it and made a detour.

My cycling buddy and I once ignored diversion signs and carried on to the bottom of a big hill where we found the whole bridge up and the area fenced off. A resident was up his ladder painting his house and as soon as he saw us he started mocking us for having ignored the diversion signs just like everybody else. Well, that was red rag to a bull so we climbed over a wall with our bikes, shuffled along a steel pipe, through some piles of gravel, over a few cowpats, some nettles, another wall.... and were on our way with a cheery wave to the annoying local.

Wet tar on your bike tyres is not good though. I found this out just a couple of weeks ago, and it took about 50 miles to get rid of the stuff ^_^.
