or super-dooper one (like mine was) for £9

That's what we've got, ok once you're sat down but can be a bit unstable when mounting/dismounting!

Those Thermarest Chairs are brilliant, especially when cycle touring as you can really lean back into them and relax. Just what you need after a day sitting upright on a bike and it's been one of the few 'luxuries' that I have consistently taken with me for the past 20 years or so.

It also puts you at the same height as your cooking stove whereas any sort of stool has you perched too high. It can also be used in a small lightweight tent when you are writing or reading as a relaxing alternative to just lolling about.

The additional weight is very little (4 small rods, a double layer of thin polycotton and a couple of straps).

A classic design that does it's job perfectly.

I don't need to lean against anything to be comfortable, but I like to be a bit higher. So a stool is indeed ideal for me. I have a Hagloffs one that weighs some 280 grams. It is not very stable, but quite high and a lot better than sitting on the ground and getting up every time. Sometimes I take it, and sometimes when I am in ultralight mood I leave it at home.

Seems to be a bit of a camping stool vs. Thermarest chair polarization of groups going on here.
I guess I need to try both and then decide. Still interesting to here the different opinions though so thanks all.

Can you actually lean back and relax in those thermorest chairs? They look like you might end up with your back on the floor and feet in the air. Would probably give one a go, but not unless you can properly sit back.

/edit nm can see question dealt with, although 2 different opinions.

Only one way to sort this out............. I think you'll find a stool makes a far better improvised weapon than a thermarest kit!

Another plus 1 for the camping stool as luxury item, really thought I'd get laughed at for mentioning it as its not hard core, so its my luxury

I bung it up the middle of my roll mat and pop both in me roll mat bag, then strap that across the rear panniers, quick access if a tire needs mending!

usually by the time I get to where I'm going i need a lie down, rather than sit, but it is great for cooking, saves the legs and takes up little space/weight.

oddly though I find myself using it less than I thought, so have been considering dumping it for a the weight saving, but its REALLY useful on those occasions when I REALLY need it, so it stays for now ;)

I love mine - you can lean back just fine but you need to have your legs out straight. Took it backpacking with a mate a couple of months back, it's the best stoned chair ever.
