So maybe China these days? But it used to be NATO & Allies 1st world, Warsaw Pact 2nd, Unaligned 3rd.

Second world was applied to countries that we’re developing but not yet reached first world levels of socio-economic development. It is largely ignored now as it is seen as patronising and pretty out of date. Even within one country such as India you can go from significant poverty to world leading technology and wealth. So the division of the globe into a hierarchy is pretty meaningless except to reinforce smug stereotypes that somehow Covid infected UK led by a slimy group of public school boys is better than anywhere else. In terms of other indicators such as quality of life the global map looks very different.

In the recent past second world referred to countries such as Mexico or Indonesia which were not as wealthy as Europe or North America but better off than central Africa. The new terminology is Low Income Country etc.

It was a fairly light hearted question, but it was something I've thought about for a while.
