I think the first, second, third world concept was made popular in the 1960s as a shorthand classification of levels of development. As other contributors have noted, it is not really very useful today.
In the contemporary context, I would say Earth is the first world, the second world is Mars and the third world Venus. Mars is the most colonizable of the other worlds and Venus will need some serious planetary-scale chemical engineering to deal with that sulphuric acid atmosphere. Who wants to be first on an MTB on Mars, the second world?
