Which Car Do You Remember with Affection from your Youth?

Good Lad! I had a model kit of the Rothmans Escort, those decals were a royal PITA... looking back it would have been easier to paint it from scratch than slide those b@stard things into position.

I think car design aesthetically nose dived after the Ford Sierra... all the style was sucked out of them and every car began to resemble a boiled sweet. Reduced drag = sh!t looking cars.

Looking at some of the proper oldies... which bright spark decided to move the wing mirrors from half way down the wings to the door... thus taking all the fun out of adjusting them?

I'm assuming that was the Vatanen / Richards Escort? And yeah, the RS500 Cossies were very nice. Loved how they went brrrrrrrrmmmmm - ptscheeee when the turbo wastegate opened, which made them spit flames out of the exhaust.

P.S. Last time I looked, my plumbing was very definitely female.

Technical point here, the noise isn't made by a wastegate,

It is actually made by a 'Dump Valve' which works totally differently, It's job is to prevent the Turbine from slowing down when the throttle is closed to reduce the time it takes to 'spool up' and provide boost.

ETA - If you ever see a Hillman Avenger with a sun roof, do not get in it.
The metal was so thin in these, that its removal for the installation of a sun roof would render it flexier than a flexy thing

I *should* know this, but it's a long time since I've had anything to do with turbos...

We never had a car when I was a kid, walked or cycled everywhere
I loved my next door neighbours white Ford Capri
I remember my wee pal, Martin had an orange scrambler bike, his dad had a burgundy Jag and his mum had a purple Hillman Imp (though they were posh)!
I used to imagine when I grew up I’d have a Citroen 2CV or a big American car with fins (pure fantasy)
I saw a Hillman Imp parked in my street a few months ago, had a good look as I slowly cycled past, forgot how tiny they were!
Great memories.

My old Art teacher at grammar school, Dick Emery (yes, really!), had one the same as the one above. Lovely sounding car with that small V8.

Phil, one of our (now retired) Urology Consultants has one, he'd come in it, in summer


And, an ENT Consultant has this Daimler, as a 'Sunday driver', to his daily Jaguar XK8 (a very early one)

And, at the other end of the scale, someone arrives in a Tesla!

I'd love one of those. The Lotus Sunbeam, that is.

Another car I really wouldn't mind to have is one of these, but they're rarer than hen's teeth and I'd need to win the lottery several times over...

Though I'd have the wibbles driving one, because the seats are on top of the fuel tank.

When I was doing my undergrad at Brunel Uni, one of the lecturers had a Martini-liveried HF Integrale - but it was the red version, not the white. Another lecturer had a series 1 Lotus Esprit.

I got a TVR Trackday for my 40th (2005)



The Griff was fast enough, but the Sagaris was m-e-n-t-a-l
On the laps with the instructor, he was following a Gallardo (I think?)
That overtook a EVO, exiting a corner
He asked me to wave at the Lambo, & left it for dead!!!

I'd love a British Racing Green, with 'digestive biscuit' leather Griffith 500
Adored the Griff, since it was announced in 1992

When we were looking for a car, & SWMBO put a deposit on the XKR, I used the time wisely
Test-driving a Chimera 450, another Griff 500, & a Cerbera (the 'baby' 420)

We ended up with the XKR, but a Cerbera would have been fun (dangerous, if provoked, but fun)

TVRs are totally crackpot - but in a really good way.

Back in the early 2000's, I was one of the photographers covering the British GT series, and there was no way I was ever going to forget the Cerbera Speed 12 that was pedalled by Bobby Verdon-Roe. Whenever it drove past at full chat, you could feel the vibration all the way down to your bones.
