I read a magazine article the other day and got to thinking which were the worst eras for fashion. If you think about the 20th C mostly you have to think of women's fashion because men spent most of the time in variations on suits (but see below). It seems to me that for women the 50s were the absolute worst: clothes and haircuts were terrible with the 40s running them a very close second.

Both men and women completely lost the plot in the 70s (the decade that style forgot) and modern shell-suited hordes are pretty abominable but I don't suppose they count as general fashion.

The only other stomach turning time for me is the Elizabethan era: all those bloody tights and ruffs.

What do you reckon?

Uncle Mort, how can you say that? The '80's had great fashion (and a few dodgy bits). The '70's were dire for clothing, but I love the home furnishings from that era.

Whenever these came out

Now. Not only do people wear ghastly cheap clothing from Primark and sportswear stores but most people are overweight and many are obese slobs. Nobody wears hats either. Just look at any film from before about 1970 and you'll still see people dressed in nice clothes, men in suits with decent leather shoes, most of them slim and well turned out and wearing hats and even gloves.

Now 2010, people don't take a pride in themselves anymore females don't wear dresses or skirts why ?? and men couldn't care a shoot what they look like, on Sunday at church I wear my Kilt with all the trimming and some have said “your over dresses” years ago we all had our “Sunday best clothes” now most both sexes wear jeans !!!

As much as I hate to do so, I have to agree with Mort. The 80s were the worst.

Actually, I think it was mostly the styles of pop stars and people off the telly that were really, really bad.

Funnily enough, at the time, the styles of the 70s were deemed totally naff, as anyone who was persecuted for wearing flairs will have had burnt into them.

70s fashions seemed really naff in the 80s, but some of it looks quite cool in retrospect.. the early 80s will never look cool (apart from me, I was cool then, but I was pretending I was in the 60s)...

More cool 70's mens jumpsuits.

What about tanktops, spaniel ear collars, matching shirt and ties in awful pastel paisley, platform shoes. I had a pair of purple, crushed velvet flares with turnups. I hope they have been burnt and do not reappear to embarrass me at anytime.
