CdF is not really a cyclocross bike but at a push you could use it in an event. It has relatively high gearing, with a compact double chainset making it speedy on roads, although it is kind of heavy so won't break any records. Also has mounting points for racks and guards.

CdA is more of a proper cyclocrosser - lower geared, with only a single chainring (avoids front mech fouling with mud), and fatter tyres for good grip off road.

For light trails and roads personally I'd pick the CdF. I own one and use it for commuting and occasional light trail riding, but I did buy a proper roadie which I do most of my weekend and fast riding on.

Thanks for that Winjim , I'm thinking the Croix de fer might be the better choice for my needs and I would probably end up doing more road than trail but will be nice to have the option as do lots of cycling with my wife and boys. If its going to be a more comfortable ride being steel then that would be another reason to buy it.

How do you end up with such a disparate choice of bikes (gearing & frame material) at this late stage of the purchase process?

Why have you landed on Genesis?

Surely you start with the activities that you are likely to undertake on the bike. This leads you to the type of bike you need. Which in turn leads you to choose between that type of bike within different brands.

It's a bit like saying I want a BMW and shall I have the dinky little 2 seater, the chubby motorway basher or the big off-roader thingy? No sense at all to that.

Local bike shop? Provider of C2W? I think the OP has posted his reasons for choosing Genesis elsewhere, he may even have done a poll, versus another brand

I still prefer the 2014 Croix de Fer 931...that stainless just makes me go all funny.

Ive got one of these as my commuting / bad weather bike. Really nice bike - very glad I got it!!

And only about two to three times the OP's apparent budget . Hey it's only money, can't take it with you and all that...
