I do the same as I would do in the car - move slightly to the right and slow to an almost stop at a decent distance from the bus

I've not found a need for a signal, if you delay for more than .32 of a second, then the bus will (under the unwritten law of London roads) filll the gap pretty sharpish, so long as another rider or driver hasn't already done so.

Stop pedalling, stand up on pedals, cover brakes, slow and nod but I'd have to be sure of stopping the traffic behind otherwise i wouldn't do it as I've had cars just go past as I'm giving way, once on a zebra crossing.

I just wrote an answer, but then re-read the OP. I'm not a reasonably nippy cyclist, so it doesn't really matter.

But for what it's worth (not much), if the bus was indicating to pull out I'd drop in behind it. If it wasn't indicating I'd probably go past, if it's safe. I wouldn't signal to the driver at all. I'd also be thinking about the road ahead: Am I, by passing the bus, letting myself in for a prolonged a bus-up-the-arse scenario down the road? I may choose to stay behind anyway.
