Named for the Dempster Dumpster, the original product that offered a skip that was able to be loaded onto a garbage truck. George Roby Dempster had a very interesting life.

I dont tend to lean my bike up against anything, but when i do, i usually lock it through my helmet, so the helmet rests against the post and the bike is against the helmet

Back tyre.

If done right the tyre will touch and nothing else, the pressure of the bikes weight against the tyre will stop the bike rolling. If the slope is too steep or it is a windy spot then the saddle can be combined with the rear tyre touch and the bike must face uphill.

It's just a bike for Heaven's sake, not a Holy Relic......and NO, it doesn't have a name....

No other method is acceptable and I am desperately trying to drum this into my kids as it takes seconds to do, becomes second nature and prevents unnecessary scrapes to the top tube caused as your bike gracefully slides along that jagged corner of a wall you just carelessly leaned it against! Slowmotion, why would you not at least try to prevent unnecessary damage to your bike?

The top tube or the rear mech.

Some folk make bike ownership more difficult that it ought to be.

I just buy and ride them and keep them cleanish.

Others assign a gender and spend days deliberating over a name before seeking peer approval for the choice of name.

There was even someone, possibly on the old Cycling Plus forums who became preoccupied with determining the 'date of birth' of her bike. Was it:
  • The day of it being assembled at the factory?
  • The day it was bought?
  • The day it arrived at her flat?
  • Some other criteria that I can't recall
Why the need to know the date of birth? To enable her to cast its horoscope

depends on the bike

mountain bike usually just lies down (often with me still attached :B))
road bike - pannier rack/saddle/bar tape...
Expedition/touring bike - panniers are the usual suspect (with the brakes on) or the click stand (also with the brakes on)...

I just buy and ride them. Anyone that knows me would say I am not particularly precious about my bikes but, I don't see any point in inflicting damage just for the sake of being lazy or careless! A moment taken ensuring it is leaned up securely greatly reduces the risk of scratches or the bike falling over knocking the gears which can cause bigger problems than just cosmetics.
