Yes, it's deeply unfashionable, but it's immensely popular and utterly brill. One that always gets the expats as well.

Maybe it's not just me then, but there's something about Vaughan Williams that just coujours up the English countryside. Think a clear blue sky, a breeze with a hint of chill in it and a high chalk downland hill with close-cropped grass and sheep grazing. Or seaside dunes. Oh dear, I'm welling up already. I think it's something about the high strings reminding me of the wind.

I'm not usually a fan of his but I sang the Dona Nobis Pacem at the Royal Festival Hall last year and it was quite moving. Especially in retrospect as it was conducted by Richard Hickox and was his last concert before he died suddenly.

As an internet/hospital radio presenter with a rock(ish) show, I suppose I'm supposed to say something like Comfortably Numb for one already mentioned example, but to be honest I think the Mozart Requiem in its entirety takes a lot of beating.

I saw it performed a while back on a sunny summer evening in the St Germain-des-Pres church in Paris. With the sun streaming through the huge stained glass windows, it came as close to a perfect musical experience as you can probably get.

I do enjoy a good Mozart Req; it's the piece to which I set my personal best for most inebriated concert. Necked 7 pints before the performance, could barely get my bow on the instrument and never was "too many notes" more apt. It beat my previous pb which was 6 pint Belshazzar's Feast.

Don't know why I never looked them up before but I just dug out the Kraftwerk TdF lyrics. Translated they go

The hell of Northern Paris - Roubaix
The Cote d'Azur and Saint Tropez
The Alps and the Pyrenees
Last stage Champs-Elysees
Galibier and Tourmalet (2 mountains)
Dancing even on the top
Bicycling at high gear
Final sprint at the finish
Flat tire on the paving-stones
The bicycle is repaired quickly
The peloton is regrouped
Comrades and friendship

I love the bit about Dancing at the top, made my day that did.
