You woz robbed!!!
Seriously; For eight weeks of training you didn't look bad at all (maybe keep your chin in if you do it again).

Thanks! I know there are things I can improve on..

Regarding the training, It is without doubt the hardest training I HAVE EVER DONE...twice a week for 8 weeks. As well as some running on the week too.

I had three fights in the navy after being "volunteered". The first two were just the pair of us windmilling and I somehow won. The third fight was against someone who actually could box and he really did a job on me. Ref stopped the fight in the second round when I headbutted my opponent in frustration at not being able to land a punch on him.

Best fight of the lot was my messmate J, a black lad with the physique of a Greek God. As he stepped into the ring the whole crowd went quiet because he really did look the part - muscled, mean and menacing. His fight lasted all of 13 seconds. 3 seconds to get to the centre of the ring from the bell and 10 seconds to be counted out. His opponent cracked him one off the jaw and J went down like a tree - funniest thing I ever saw.

I went watching / supporting him when he had his bout.

He won, natch

And I really appreciated the support on the night.

I changed work laptops recently, but not sure why the radio silence.

I personally got a lot out of it.

I’d been boxing training for a while, but never had an actual match. So I did a white collar to have a match.

The white collar just means unsanctioned and not experienced boxers. Previously I’d have been deemed too old to have a sanctioned amateur match. They have since brought in something called “seniors”.

There are a few companies that run these, so I can’t speak for all of them, but they try and match you up on a few things including ability. So my opponent was a similar age but a bit bigger than me and about 10kg heavier, but I’d have said I was more skilled.

As for fitness, I really took it seriously. I went in pretty fit, trained 5 days a week for 10 weeks, didn’t drink, lived super clean and was in the shape of my life. My match lasted about 3 minutes of actual boxing and I was total goosed at the end.

I saw a comment about being thugs….some of the lads were a bit rough and ready but all seemed decent people….I’d not consider myself a thug…..boxing has many rules and feels more like playing rugby to me.

I did a course of kung fu once, taught by a feller who was about 5 foot 3. He wasn't a thug by any means - far from it, a gentle and humorous chap - but he did admit to enjoying going down the then Hammersmith Palais of a Friday night and waiting to be picked on. He called it 'bully-bashing'.
