I might try these Planet X Rage tires from around 2013. £15 for the pair. Worth a punt?

Banana Industries have a few sets of tyres quite cheap too.

How bad can they be?

I had a set of them that I used on my fixed gear commuter many years ago. They weren't terrible. As with everything Planet X, marketed as 'high end tyres' discounted to £15, which was probably a fair price for them. Probably Continental Ultra Sport/Race level. I didn't buy a second pair, because as with everything Planet X, they stopped selling in favour of the next "amazing bargain".

Bought a set of 23mm GP5000 at LBS closing down sale, just couldn't refuse a good deal. Haven't aged that well and starting to crack around the shoulder all the way around on both sides - time to change out? Guessing they have 5-6,000 miles on them

This happened to me also. I don’t rate Conti at all. The P-zero as fast but harder wearing.

I have this on all of my Schwalbe pro one tyres with tan walls being noticeably worse, only one tyre has failed at that’s because the join at the sidewall seam leaks air and sealant so badly i wont even use it with an inner, the rest seem to be riding just fine. I also had this years back when i was all conti 4000s, not had this on P-Zero or any of my Schwalbe MTB or gravel tyres.

I had a set of 23mm Michelin Krylion 2 Endurance on my steel road bike till recently. Good tyres in my option, fast rolling and good puncture resistance. Currently £29 on eBay

I’m interested to know these things. People always go for the same marketed fast tires. I bet there’s a few rare types out there which are decent but it’s not common knowledge.

You do know https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews exists?

Amazing database of all tyres and objective testing, cuts out all the myths that fly around and replaces with much more solid evidence.

Krylion2s at 17.9 watt, closest equivalent in the current Michelin range is the Pro5 TLR at 12.5 watt. Decent 'summer race tyre' like a GP5000 or Corsa around the 9.5-10.5 mark.

Don't take the numbers as anything more than an a Vs b comparison, they don't correlate to real world figures but if it tests fast there, it will be fast.

Should be fast but we don’t ride on hard steel smooth roads.
