Who doesn't have any specific goals for 2013?

Last year, I set myself a mileage goal of 5,000 miles, which was great, I achieved it, and I was happy.

But last year was also a pretty rotten year for me. I got knocked off my bike in February, and my cat collapsed in April, and I discovered he has a brain tumour. At the beginning of both those months, I'd joined a "miles for the month" challenge on another forum, and failed to meet it because the events forced me to cut back my cycling. Being the paranoid person that I am, I decided not to tempt fate by joining any other challenges.

For that reason, I've deliberately not set a goal mileage for 2013, or any other goals, for that matter, other than to just ride my bikes as much as I can, and enjoy it.

I've seen a few posts in various places about goals, and I was just wondering who either can't be bothered or deliberately avoids getting involved in that kind of thing.

I've made a conscious decision not to set any specific goals this year.

This time last year I had just been made redundant and I started to use my bike as much as I ever have, because I had the time and I needed to save money. However, I found it extremely difficult to motivate myself to take advantage of the time I had and I did a lot of moping around:sad:. Most of my riding was short journeys to my partner's house, to the shops and once a fortnight to sign on! So my mileage wasn't significantly up on previous years, when I would make sure I took advantage of the weekends and summer evenings to do longer rides.

I'm now working again, in a job which involves a lot of driving and a mixture of very long days and some short days. So this year, from a cycling perspective, it's just a case of aiming to get out on my bike reasonably often. I will keep a note of my mileage, but I won't care if I cycle a mile to the local shop or do a 50 mile weekend ride. The important thing for me, I've decided, is to cycle often and not worry about the miles.

I used to set mileage goals but now I don't bother. I only cycled about 270 miles in 2012 compared to nearly 3000 miles the year before. This year i'll just do whatever.

My only goal at the moment is to actually get back on the bike!

Despite being guilty of fraudulently listing some resolutions on this Forum ( oh hubris) , I gave up making lists about twenty years ago. I used to make them each night.....and spectacularly failed to cross off some of the tasks each day. When this daily failure started to gnaw at me, I solved it by not making lists any more.
I was also an obsessive time-keeper, spending a few seconds checking my watch every hour. At the end of each day, I would take off my watch in bed, and feel an amazing sense of relief. One morning I never put it back on.

I have been watch-free for twenty years.

Relax.

My goal is to survive another year on our pot holed, barely visible faded white lines and road signs, green mould covered, tree blocking view of direction signs, full of motorists who, don't have lights, don't indicate, give you minimal passing space etc etc roads!! Then if i don't come off in the meantime and i'm still here this time next year then i'll be happy!

Sorry wrong thread.
