Welcome to the rural commuters club. Sadly, I'm leaving it in 21 days.

Good luck in your new job.

I've just started a new job after 10 years in my old one. Different direction in IT so its all new to me but ended up with a 15k pay rise

Not sure if it's commutable yet as its right in the middle of Birmingham but maybe

Well done...My pay rise is nowhere near that but significant enough.... Not sure I'd tackle a Brum commute. My brother lives in Bourneville and works in a city centre office and I suggested bike commute when tunnels were shut a couple years ago... He thought I was mad but he's not owned a bike for thirty five years....

What bike ya gettin ?

Thinking of a Giant Propel 2..... thought about a TCR and a Defy Composite all between 1K and 1.5K can't justify anymore, cant justify that really unless you take into account we are a one car family and always will be, as Mrs V has no intention of learning to drive ever (but does cycle on a Boardman Road bike) nobody would bat an eyelid if I spent the same on a second car if we could both drive but because its a bike I'm mad apparently (- coming back from random tangent...) just love the look of the propel... totally OTT for commuting.....but got to be done

edit.... current Defy2 will be kept for winter duties and new bike put to bed from October to March

Edit again...... hopefully one of these

Yeh it's right in the city centre too so it's busy whichever way I'd tackle it. It's only 7 miles direct but that's on very busy roads

Update\thread resurrection alert....

Half way through 4 weeks notice... Initially my boss wanted to talk to me about staying.. I couldn't be a****d with it....an hour in his office selling my own job to me. 500 quid pay rise and still work every Saturday.... So I just said over the phone... "can you match £X.. And knock10 hours off my working week.... No? No its not worth me coming to see you then...."

He asked me to keep it secret for a while.... another branch rang me discussing rotas for the week after I left... I rang him and insisted he at least tell the other sales staff as work was being done that was useless...

Warehouse staff and drivers don't know yet. as he doesn't want the garages I deal with directly to know, as he might lose some business because of it.... I told him if morning/evening outgoing sales calls are still made and the rep calls every few days.... and they keep the momentum up...... after a couple of weeks they will see everything's the same and carry on using us. Its not as though I'm going to a rival like a couple of leavers did and customers followed them...

However if I'm that indispensable how come it wasn't reflected in my wages? one of his ideas to keep me was to move me to a busier branch as it would give me a challenge.... Err... that's the branch 40 minutes away by car and no chance of biking it.... cheers

Getting a bit scary now, last time I changed jobs it was for my stress levels/sanity I'd got close to just walking out a couple of times and anything was better than that, I'd have taken a couple of grand pay cut to get out..... This time it had to be something really special and I think it is....

Don't stress mate and don't burn your bridges when you leave . If you need or want to go back then you know they want you .

He did say if it doesn't work out I'm to call him and I probably would to be honest. Just a bit scary someone else will be providing the means to pay for the new bike the mortgage.

An interesting anomaly is I'm going back to weekly pay... I thought this would be a major issue as bills are monthly... but if save up 4 weeks pay (which I can do as I'll have a previous months wage to live on) it is more than my current monthly wage and every 5 week month gives me 'a bonus' as no bills will come out of it.....winner!!!!
