I've been carrying around loads of unneccessary weight. My spare bottle cage bosses were blanked off with steel bolts and I've just realised I've got some spare titanium ones I should replace them with. Plus, I need to cut the carbon steerer down by at least an inch and a half, and I still haven't got round to taking all the decals off the wheels. Can't believe I've been lugging all that around!

I was once a proper weight weiner. My mountain bike was under 18lbs at one point. I did it mostly because, from a geek POV I was interested in seeing how light it was possible to go and still have a usable bike, but also because my offroading often involved a lot of lifting over stiles and fences and dragging through hedges.

It doesn't seem to make much sense to me on short bike ride. It all feels the same whether my weight is 79 or 72 kg. The difference is a whole bike to some people, and an awful lot/little of expensive carbon.

I found that I was quite a bit quicker up the hills after losing 5kg...

You forgot me ^_^
I even have a bungee cord permanently in my spacious panniers, in case I want to tie something on the rack too
Sometimes, when the wind blows hard, I carry extra, needless stuff to keep grounded on the commute!

Me too. The list of stuff in the bag increases every time I wish I'd brought 'such and such' with me.
I usually carry a choice of glasses and gloves. Spare lights and batteries in the winter. D lock on social rides when we stop at a pub or cafe. 2 bottles of drink for longer rides. Snacks. First aid supplies..
Occasionally when I nip out for a quick errand with no bags or extra accessories, the bike feels so different and easy to ride!!

When I lose the extras *mumbles incoherently* stones of fat I'm carrying, then I'll think about the bike.... possibly.

However life is too short and there are far too many Gins, pies and cakes i haven't tasted yet so the chances of me worrying about the weight of my dustcaps are rather minimal.
