Somebody I was at school with was sent to prison for an immigration fraud but was cleared on appeal.
He said it was a bit like our old (boarding) school but with fewer nutters.

There's a Protea Hotel in Cape Town that used to be a prison, the rooms are quite small but it's perfect if you're riding the Argus.

There was a prison wardens football team in our local league, away games at the prison were always an interesting experience, but they had a great clubhouse and social club for after the game.

In a way,are we not imprisoned now under this lockdown? Ok,not quite Belmarsh or 'the scrubbs',but maybe like a nice and friendly open prison.:okay:

I was a bit of a naughty boy in my late teens.
I never got caught and I self reformed when I met my future wife 46 years ago.
I have lead a blameless existence ever since. ;)
My life could easily have taken a totally different path, but then I've always been a jammy git.
I went to school with a certain well known Lord of the Realm who got banged up over the expenses scandal a while ago. Of all the people to get nicked, he would have been bottom of my list of most likely suspects.
Just goes to show - never judge a book by its cover.

1971 i tried to join the Prison Service.Passed all the tests and medical. But failed the interview at Wakefield, Armley Jail was an eye opener, even just walking through for part of the medical, customers were shouting things.

I tried it for 4 years, an old Victorian prison, 2 to a cell and no cellular sanitation, on nights the prisoners would buzz to use the toilet and we had to escort them to the toilet block, why on earth did people keep coming back? thankfully now demolished and a new prison built

Now 58yrs old but many many years ago I made a couple of bad mistakes, and had to pay by doing the time. Then the big wake up call for me was when I took the blame for a loved one and got locked up, Wandsworth and Scrubs shook me to the core by seeing to many Hot jugs of water and sugar and PP9s in a sock so was over the moon when I came out after a few years. I value my freedom too much to ever go back in.

I have a friend, she's coming to the end of a 7 year sentence. she's in an open prison and I have been to see her a few times. the open prison all looks quite nice, but still a dreadful place to be, but far better than Durham where she started her time. here's an interesting fact! Jars of marmite are banned in prison ( used to make hooch) I write & send cards weekly and send books & DVD via Amazon ( the only way you can send stuff)

Hi Gary, your friend will need lots of support, 7 years of being told what time to eat, what time to get up and what time to go to bed, its hard but with help from a good friend, however it may take years to get over it.
I once took a murderess back to Durham prison, it was a lot better than where she had been staying for 6 months while the trial took place, as jails go its one of the better ones.
Jail is not supposed to be a punishment, the punishment is removal from society, this is sometimes very hard to deal with.
Good luck with your friend, I hope her time can be gotten over, sadly it will never be forgotten
