I thought that the roads in West Yorkshire were bad - strewth! I got 50 yards down the road and cycled into what I thought was a small puddle. It turned out to be a 6 inch deep pothole filled with water; my front wheel stopped dead but I didn't! I banged the stem with my knee and then almost castrated myself falling back onto the top tube - aargh!

The lanes were good though. ;)

yes we got some good pot holes round here, parts of the top of Beake ave are like a ploughed field, Glad you enjoyed the lanes. I'm of out in about half an hour, heading for middleton, Newlands Nursery.

Me and her had a 30-mile trip up to Sheringham Park - a bit dodgy where the snow accumulations from last week had not yet been cleared, but good to be out after the sufficiency of christmas - Got a calorie counter on my new computer - looks like coasting down hill burns as much as toiling up a long climb!

Off today for a few miles around the Broads.

You were brave to ride up to my neck of the woods. I`ve been waiting for the lanes to clear but they are still bad in places. I landed up yesterday riding 4 miles out of the village and then back and cycled through the village and out the other side for a while and then back home.Every time I turned up the side lanes they were dodgy. People just thought I was mad:-) riding up and down but I got my rocks off and felt better after.

Went out yesterday, I knew that I shouldn't but I was a desperate man; main roads fine then turned off into a little used country lane - it was an ice rink, fell off, pedal gouged a 40 foot track in the ice and I banged my helmeted head on the road - ouch! Carried on, back on the main roads, for another 20+miles. Enjoyed it but still have the headache.....might give it a rest today!

Not been on the bike since before Xmas...whoops......

Made some space in the garage for my wife to use the exercise bike (pretty good one given to us)...only to find the 'p' fairy had somehow sneaked into the garage over the last 10 days and let the fixed road bike's rear tyre down......it was fully inflated before Christmas......hmmmmmm ;)

I'd planned I my first run out around the lanes this morning after coming off two weeks ago, but there's been a heavy frost and that's how I got caught out last time. At least I managed to turn my legs on the turbo for half an hour. Another week off the bike and I'm up at least a dress size.

Yeah im off out riding on my commute.

Do you suppose there is an eleventh commandment, "Thou shalt always get a puncture when it is freezing cold and thy fingers shall become like useless sausages and hurt like buggery when thou trapst them betwixt rim and tyre"?
Very likely. That was my first one of the year, so it had obviously been waiting for me.

When I looked at the back tyre more closely, there was a patch suddenly down to the cord, so I've now got a new one on for today's ride. But 13.39 and I still haven't been out the door yet - it's bloody cold and I don't really want to go.

Got dressed and ready to do the ride up and down the clear roads in and out of the village again, went out front to test the road and nearly fell flat:ohmy: black ice everywhere so my wife and I went for a walk on the local footpaths:laugh:

Where I live in our village, there is a stretch of road in front of the house that sees little sun and is the perfect black ice warning.

My commute back yesterday was good though,im worried about my fitness again.I struggled.Had a work colleague cycling back with me from Waterloo to the Green Man (Leytonstone).....I could also show him a route back from Waterloo which I found by accident when diverted due to roadworks down Fleet Street.

It comprised with crossing Waterloo Bridge,Waldorf Hotel (if it's spelt like that) down fleet street towards St Pauls (Thameslink) but we turned into Chancery Lane (of which my work colleague complained we were going in circles)...Cross right (at the bottom) into High Holborn.Down to the funny rounderbout where the small statue thing is and straight on,up to Barts,St Pauls and the London Wall Road...Past Liverpool Street and straight across onto St Botolphs and the Mile End Road.No bad and I found most cars and stuff considerate last night...apart from the number 1 bus on Waterloo Bridge who passed too fast and too close. The way he was driving at a guess must mean he was on his last bit.

The nicest bit of the ride was when I pulled off of the Whipps Cross Road into James Lane and the smell of the forest was really nice...coupled with the coldness of it .I thought I may as well use the backstreets as it would probably be safer.

Walked the bike down our frozen lane to the road this morning but came straight back after seeing the state of it, ice everywhere. Managed a twelve mile hilly loop this aft though once the sun had been out a bit but the old knee trouble flared up again halfway round, bollox! Very painful and depressing this. ;) Hoping warmer weather and a lighter bike come spring will help me out a bit.

19 miles today
still bits of black ice off the beaten track
came home via a main road as I'm sure it was getting slippier as the ride went on
