Out today for a ride to Newlands Nursery, got there and it was shut. Called in at Kingsbury water park on the way back. It had froze Hard over night and there was lots of black ice and patches of fog. Once past Shustoke the fog was thick, freezing and in for the day. I left Coventry via Washbrook Lane, Oak Lane, Harvest Hill Lane and Kimwalsey Lane. There was black ice on parts of Oak Lane and parts of Harvest Hill and Kimwalsey were unridable, I got of and walked, water had run of the fields and froze creating patches of sheet ice. After that I kept to the main roads as much as possible. The only problem I had was a puncture near the water park, they had been clipping the bushes in Wishaw lane, I spent half an hour at the road side pulling large thorns out of my rear gatorskin. Apart from that it was an enjoyable morning out on the bike.

Walked the bike down our frozen lane to the road this morning but came straight back after seeing the state of it, ice everywhere. Managed a twelve mile hilly loop this aft though once the sun had been out a bit but the old knee trouble flared up again halfway round, bollox! Very painful and depressing this. Hoping warmer weather and a lighter bike come spring will help me out a bit.

Obviously i don`t know you and at what age you are so don`t take this the wrong way.
I got back in the saddle this year at 65, my knees are not the best, my back has a problem and on my MTB I really thought that I`d have to give it a miss.
I enjoyed riding again so much that I wasn`t prepared to give up so I invested in a mid range E-Bike after talking to people on the net with similar problems and all I can say is Wow!!! OK, I tend to ride in assist mode and use a high gear so that I still get my exercise with the proviso that if my knees are playing up near the end of my outing I can switch to fully powered to get me home if need be.(I`ve only used full power only once when I had twisted my knee the previous day)

Just a thought. We are a family of dodgy knees (from our family trade) and the same was true when I finally convinced my dad to get an electric disabled vehicle to get him to the shops and back. It was a life changing purchase.

My bike looks very like a road MTB and 99% of people would never know.

As I said" don`t take it the wrong way" but it is a way of keeping your enjoyment going.

Had given up on going out today as the frost was still on the decking in the garden and the temperature still showed 0 degrees C at 12.00. Had a bath and by 1.45pm the temperature was up to 4 degrees C so went for a short ride one hour long but pushed quite hard.

I kept to the main country lanes and avoided one notorious stretch of road which can be sheet black ice and sure enough as I went past the junction of that road saw that it had been closed off. Nice hilly route and got my HR up to 97% MHR at one stage and averaged 87% MHR over the whole ride.

Went out at 2 pm and did my standard short MTB ride, only 10 miles around the local lanes and reservoirs but probably around 1000 ft of climbing.. Only had a couple of dodgy moments with hard-packed frozen snow, otherwise I was able to ride the crunchy stuff in the middle of the lanes, which is rough but grippy. Got back before dark, took a load of rubbish to the dump then called at a cycling mate's house and got a cup of tea.

I've been doing lots of walking instead. It's much more sociable than cycling if your partner doesn't ride a bike. In fact, I'm considering getting rid of all but one of my bikes and spending the time walking instead.

Well was out on the bike, travelling to work. Very dicey on the roads up here. Tried my off road route and promptly came off, so it was back to the road.
Very cold but nice to be back on the bike:becool:

Can't think of much worse than talking whilst training tbh! If it's just leasure then a walk is fine but when I'm running or cycling I'm not in the mood to talk to anyone! Anyway by the looks of the forecast tomorow I won't be cycling, more heavy snow so will get the snowboard out and get some more filming done.

Not to sure?
Got another 50 miles in today, but some of the back lanes are still lethal in places.

As my riding companion discovered as we slowed down at a T junction.

Fair point, but I see little enough of my other half as it is, and it seems unfair on the odd days we do get to spend together for me to disappear off on a bike forhalf a day. If she comes with me she can't keep up unless I slow down, so a good long walk together seems like a much better solution. I miss the cycling a bit, but you see a lot more on foot.

Do you suppose there is an eleventh commandment, "Thou shalt always get a puncture when it is freezing cold and thy fingers shall become like useless sausages and hurt like buggery when thou trapst them betwixt rim and tyre"? ;)

I recall getting a punc. EARLY this year when it was soo coold I had to knock up a face mask outta a hoody I never use CUE a punc. 3/4's of the way around...of my route...and I already had my roady hat on and extra layer

More bloody snow , this is murder.
Been nightshift all week and the weathers been crap during the day. Can't even get on the turbo now for christmas tree in living room , and the grand kid whos staying wants the TV for the disney channel all the time .
MRS D has made me put the mountain bike away in the loft " till after the festive season , as it takes up too much space in the dining room."
Only 5 days left before the tree has to come down , unless I go completely mad and take an axe to it.

This is really now beginning to become a pain in the A***. Our roads have just cleared from the ice, I got one short ride in since Christmas and now a fairly light covering of snow overnight refuses to melt on the roads and narrow lanes.

I just can`t believe that my first few months of getting back on the bike and enjoying it has come when I can`t ride:angry:

So now my wife and I are out for a country walk. OK! we will enjoy it but I normally liked to go for a ride and then(warmed up) go out for a walk with her. She don`t know how lucky she is to be getting all my attention:girl:

I blame Brown:biggrin:

Same here, roads were just becoming rideable for the road bike. Now its back to about 4 inches of snow, couldnt even get my car on the estate this morning had to dig it out twice! (bloody rear wheel drive)
