I wish I'd had front and rear cams back in about '92, would have made for some thrilling viewing.

I had just left work (school holiday/saturday job building and selling Emmelle bicycles) and was heading around this corner, closely followed by a double decker bus, when the front wheel went, the bus braked and skidded and I managed to roll off to the side holding one of the ends of the drop bars, throwing myself into the kerb and slinging my bike into the kerb preventing both from being flattened - thanking my lucky stars that I had the reactions of an 18 year old.

Not sure it would work out the same if it happened now

Coming off on ice cost me dearly in 2010 in the form of 3 weeks or so off work with shoulder and rib injury. Self employed at the time, so no sick pay. Winter 2011 and another slide on ice gave me an unpleasant hip injury which kept me off the bike for about a month, and only a gradual build up of miles after that.

Winter 2012 I invested in spiked tyres for the MTB, but even then had some scary moments. No offs or injuries though. From my point of view, riding in icy weather just isn't worth it. They only bother with gritting bus routes around here; away from them and it can be treacherous for weeks on end. Bike will be a last resort. Fortunately I don't commute by bike anyway; pleasure miles only.

Its only when the snow has been gritted & poughed up, by motor vehicles, and allowed to freeze that ice can become a problem. 240 miles a weekend, and never had any bother with ice. The problem, I feel, is that you see a "clear road" & forget that it was cold enough to freeze what water may have been on the road.
Those clear patches on the road may not always be the safest!!

Are we talking about Winter already? It's only September!

That last crash wasn't due to ice by the way, his wheel got caught between the red lines.

Gotta watch out for the ice: don't like it when the rear end goes :giggle:

I commandeer the wife's bike and put some spikey tires on and commute on this is there's ice about. You do need an extra bike or wheel set at least as the tires are hard work.

I know it's only September but could be worth getting in the ice tires now. Stocks soon run out if and when there's a proper cold spell

My dad has some proper chunky MTB wheels that I could easily fit to my commuter. Either that or I just change the original tires on the wheelset I got with the commuter for some chunky tires. Every little grip helps.

I'm looking forward to winter. Love cold dark winter mornings, and I have ice tyres for when it gets really bad.

Best thing about it is cycling though 10 miles of snow to the office, to find half the office claim they can't travel the 2 miles in.
