A) Not necessarily follow advice, especially where you can see it is stupid.
B) Try to arrange work and home so this, "I have to use my car" thing recedes.
Generalisations again
Its the easiest thing in the world to lump everyone together and condemn them all...
I filled my tank because I saw it as prudent. No-one suggested i should, i didnt take advice...i simply took the decision myself...and easy one as i was due to fill up 1.5 days later anyway.
Try to arrange work and home ??? not sure what you mean. I'm a fairly typical fella, i drive 40 odd miles a day for work. I dont have a choice. My skills are in a very specific area, there are NO companies in my area that use my skills, so i have to travel. \Yes i could retrain, but that brings its own problems, long term ones, not an easy choice at all.
Prior to this job, i lived locally to my employer and cycle commuted almost exclusively, ALL year round, for twenty years solid. Given a choice, i'd swap back any day, every day...but life aint that simple. Its simple to generalise, any fool can do that, but life's not simple, choices are not always simple.
Moving away from your post Adrian...
I seem to be going against the grain in this one...no matter, i like a good discussion. But too much blanket critisism of people filling up their cars is just daft. Some of those filling up will be stupid, selfish and uninformed (or poorly informed). But some of us rely on a car or we don't get paid. Some of us take a simple decision to put a bit extra in and perhaps give ourselves a bit of breathing room IF it goes t1ts up.
Like i said earlier....its hardly crime of the century is it ?
As it turns out, its all a load of bollix for now anyway. Meh, no problem, i won't get het up, deal with a situation as it arises, deal with it in a timely manner and dont get caught out...i'll do the same next time...because i have to get to work or i dont get paid.
There are a lot of numpties out there causing problems....but people, stop the blanket critisism of drivers for filling up. Thats just reverting to herd mentality. Think that some people just actually may genuinely need their cars and took appropriate steps. Those of you that clearly could manage and wait...good for you, i wish i had that choice.
If you get right down to the nitty gritty, look at it this way...
There's a potential strike looming, there's a fear you may not get fuel if it all kicks off. You need petrol or you dont work and you dont get paid. Do you think ahead, fill up JUST in case and give yourself a little breathing space (that may or may not be needed...you still dont know)...or do you do nothing, wait, then if it kicks off, the pumps are suddenly dry and you're stuck at home, no work, no pay.
Which would you choose ? give yourself a little breathing space (which may or may not be needed)...or gamble with your livelihood. No brainer of a choice for me.
BTW, there IS an alternative for me....cycle 42 miles every day for work and if the strike did kick off at the wrong time...cycle 42 miles every day for 12 days on the trot at the same time as doing 10 hour shifts...lovely choice eh ?
