why are people so stupid?

Here for rides.
I need my car for work.
My daughter needs her car for work.
Public transport is non-existent here.
Not practical to commute by bike.
Government advises me to make sure my car is full of fuel.
The other 30 million drivers have also been advised to keep their cars full of fuel.
If I don't fill my cars up my cars run out of fuel.
Filling stations are running out of fuel due to governement advice.

Don't knock the drivers - what else can they do?

"Think"

I live in St Ives Cambridgeshire, only use £10 a week for my wife to do her gardening and fetch the shopping.
All the petrol stations in St Ives, there's only 2 ! both dry. Car has only 21 miles left in it so were cut off !!

A) Not necessarily follow advice, especially where you can see it is stupid.
B) Try to arrange work and home so this, "I have to use my car" thing recedes.

Generalisations again

Its the easiest thing in the world to lump everyone together and condemn them all...
I filled my tank because I saw it as prudent. No-one suggested i should, i didnt take advice...i simply took the decision myself...and easy one as i was due to fill up 1.5 days later anyway.

Try to arrange work and home ??? not sure what you mean. I'm a fairly typical fella, i drive 40 odd miles a day for work. I dont have a choice. My skills are in a very specific area, there are NO companies in my area that use my skills, so i have to travel. \Yes i could retrain, but that brings its own problems, long term ones, not an easy choice at all.
Prior to this job, i lived locally to my employer and cycle commuted almost exclusively, ALL year round, for twenty years solid. Given a choice, i'd swap back any day, every day...but life aint that simple. Its simple to generalise, any fool can do that, but life's not simple, choices are not always simple.

Moving away from your post Adrian...
I seem to be going against the grain in this one...no matter, i like a good discussion. But too much blanket critisism of people filling up their cars is just daft. Some of those filling up will be stupid, selfish and uninformed (or poorly informed). But some of us rely on a car or we don't get paid. Some of us take a simple decision to put a bit extra in and perhaps give ourselves a bit of breathing room IF it goes t1ts up.
Like i said earlier....its hardly crime of the century is it ?

As it turns out, its all a load of bollix for now anyway. Meh, no problem, i won't get het up, deal with a situation as it arises, deal with it in a timely manner and dont get caught out...i'll do the same next time...because i have to get to work or i dont get paid.

There are a lot of numpties out there causing problems....but people, stop the blanket critisism of drivers for filling up. Thats just reverting to herd mentality. Think that some people just actually may genuinely need their cars and took appropriate steps. Those of you that clearly could manage and wait...good for you, i wish i had that choice.

If you get right down to the nitty gritty, look at it this way...
There's a potential strike looming, there's a fear you may not get fuel if it all kicks off. You need petrol or you dont work and you dont get paid. Do you think ahead, fill up JUST in case and give yourself a little breathing space (that may or may not be needed...you still dont know)...or do you do nothing, wait, then if it kicks off, the pumps are suddenly dry and you're stuck at home, no work, no pay.
Which would you choose ? give yourself a little breathing space (which may or may not be needed)...or gamble with your livelihood. No brainer of a choice for me.

BTW, there IS an alternative for me....cycle 42 miles every day for work and if the strike did kick off at the wrong time...cycle 42 miles every day for 12 days on the trot at the same time as doing 10 hour shifts...lovely choice eh ?

Let's go back to basics. If I say that there is a chance of a water strike in two weeks time, are you going to start filling up every recipient you have right now? I think not. So what is the difference? There is no petrol strike in two week's time so let's not panic and create a shortage and nuisance for everyone. Let's not behave like headless chickens. Since the beginning of this stupid behaviour by people, I have not once changed my buying habit and my car is still running on one third tank.

That I would cycle, unless there was some monstrous hills in between.
Adrian, (and all others that blanket critisise everyone who filled up their tanks)...while i'm sure you're a nice chap and if we ever met, i'm sure we'd chat about our similar like of cycling etc etc...but you're just giving knee jerk reactions, you just don't want to concede that some people, like it or not, actually NEED the car and NEED to make sure they can get to work.
I'm sure it goes against what you think is right or best, but nothing you're saying carries any weight, it won't make a jot of difference to me because what you're saying is utopian nonsense, it doesnt reflect other peoples reality..just your own ideal.

I'm 53, i work 10 hours a day, every three weeks i work 12 days on the trot, much as i'd love to commute by bike, its not really on. I'd LOVE to do it, but i'd be spending 13 hours a day working and travelling. At 25 i'd do it...at 53.....no thanktyou. Ive got a life...just.
Move closer to work ?...up till 6 months ago, as stated, i commuted almost exclusively by bike and loved every minute of it, winter, summer, rain and sun. Nothing grips me more right now than the fact i miss it. Now i have a temporary contract, so i may not even be working there in 6 months.....so moving closer is a no brainer either.

See, these utopian ideals you have just don't hold water, you're generalising, lumping everyone together, we're all idiots because we dont fit your ideals. Just accept some of us really do need a car for circumstances you just don't want to accept.

Open your minds everyone, see things from other peoples point of view, remove the blinkers.
For every idiot out there panic buying, there's a guy who needs to have things covered. He doesnt have the luxury of sitting back and not worrying.

On a different level, i was chatting with my dad who's been blind for years, telling him about the 'crisis'. He said nothings ever changed...and never will. He's seen it all before, we're not the first.

out of interest if someone needs to keep their tank topped up as contingency because they need to use a car will the petrol they have been topping up with still be in the tank of the car they need to use every day on the first day of any actual strike, which is still unannounced and at least 7 days away by law?

If so can I have the details of the petrol sipping marvel they drive so I can buy the lovely Helen one.

Peace of mind Greg.
TBF, at the time it all kicked off, i didnt realise they had to give 7 days notice. What i did realise was i have food to put on the table, a mortgage to pay and a temporary contract job i'd like to become permanent, so i'm not going to take any chance f'king it up. Fill the car up, sit back and relax, i've given myself peace of mind for a while at least.

Imagine, that day i'd heard, Imagine i didnt put fuel in and they announced the next day they were going to strike (that MAY have happened, i dont have a crystal ball). That very next day would have been pandemonium and i may have struggled to get fuel.
How do i know my boss wouldnt think 'FFS, he can't even make sure he can get to work...idiot'

Peace of mind...fill the car up. To me its a perfectlly sensible decision (and to be honest, i don't give a damn what anyone else thinks)

I'm quite clearly wasting my time...no problem, i'm enjoying going against the grain on this one

the peace of mind argument is a compelling one. having all the facts you can lay your hands on when you make a decision even more so.

I'm perfectly capable of seeing other people's points of view thanks. All I did was suggest that advice requires critical examination and that alternatives exist in many situations. At no point did I say that you are all idiots, I might privately have considered you victims but I kept that to myself.
Please don't feed the trolls!

Do remember that you are the one with the normal common viewpoint which sits firmly within the grain of society here.
Hey, what the hell, i may be wrong i may be right, depends on your point of view.
Its all good, i'm at ease with it all.
