So as a regular commuter for the past 4 years or so I've tended to use my commute as a there and back exercise direct from A to B. Talk of adding miles seemed slightly foreign to me as I would prefer to go for separate long rides without having a backpack on and when I've got more time.

Well 2-3 weeks ago I got a £200 tax rebate so bought myself a Garmin, a bit of playing with drawing maps etc I've now found ways of adding to both routes. Now this may sound like an advert for a GPS device and it is. I've found little used roads with beautiful views of the test river, nice little climbs and all by adding another 30-60 mins to my normal commute.

I blooming love the extended commute club, it's the only way I'm seeming to get the miles in these days with so many other life commitments.
I just head off and get lost somewhere in the general direction of work and then arrive at some point.

I commute roughly the same area, into Romsey from near Salisbury, direct is 14 miles but still manage to put down 50 plus miles some days,up through the test or Dunn valley, you will find plenty of quiet back roads,I meandered a unknown route the other day just using the map on the Garmin, between the a35 and a27 would have been lost with out it

The extended commute club, where the road that goes X miles in the wrong direction has to be explored because you need to know what's round the corner. It's the best club to be in.

I can't remember the last time I cycled straight to work or back home, and I try and go different ways to work/home just to add a couple of extra miles
