Many, many years ago I lived in Southampton for a few years. Traffic was always a bit chaotic. I had to drop some colleagues off at a hotel right in the centre of Southampton about a month ago and it was frankly ridiculous. I really don't understand why anyone doing this type of commute every day wouldn't give serious consideration to alternatives. I have since decided that if anyone wants me to be a taxi service to a hotel they had better have booked a hotel next to a motorway otherwise they are being left to walk into town.

Typical was one guy who then moved in to block the cycle path, and then when I moved out did the opposite.

A couple of times now I have deliberately pulled in behind them and simply waited until they move in, then move out, then when they move out, I move in.

A.K.A. the Hokey Cokey Block.

I've been beeped by a lorry before for taking primary near IKEA whilst leaving plenty of space and being very careful in doing so. Reason he beeped me I imagine is that there's a cycle lane nearby but it's been so poorly layed out I find myself using the road and risking my life amongst the lorries and incurring their wrath.

Given both the IKEA building and the Cunard are only a couple of years old, it shows how little consideration cyclists are given in urban planning. To give the council some credit they have consulted cyclists over the current works underway near Queens Way just round the corner.

In answer to the OP there are a million reason to drive rather than cycle, I think it's rather shortsighted to think otherwise.

Motorists aren't idiot nor are cyclists, some people are idiot no matter what mode of transport they use.
