where people can post gear deals that are particularly good. It would have to be policed to prevent spammers I suppose.

Yes please, bike gear is so expensive

most should be expensive, 'cos it's good kit.
With the exception of some things, it's not possible to make a product that will do the job correctly, and last, for a cheap price.
Bargains should be used discriminately.

Sorry I disagree to a certain extent, its because the retailers know its a specialised market and as such they tend to excessively mark up the prices.

I also disagree about bargains being used discriminately, bargains don't have to be poorer quality, some very good quality gear is often sold off as clearance lines.

Its a well known fact that most cyclists are high earners, which probably explains the total disregard for the cost that exists for many of the forum members.

Quality by all means, but cycle retailers need to stop ripping off the cyclist.

'cheap' is not the same as 'bargain'

Maybe not, but occasionally I see kit which is waaaaaay below retail price, really below. Like some of the Howies kit I picked up recently, or some 3/4 bib shorts I got for something like 75% off.

Of course there are bargains,

Cheap is not the same as not worth buying.

Dave.

Altura Night Vision Waterproof Jacket £40

I found what I think is a good bargain price on the Altura Night Vision Waterproof Jacket earlier for £40 delivered (includes 10% discount when you spend over £50)

They are V good jackets and do the job. Just be a little careful of the zips. For the most part they are fine but they have a reputation for 'sticking up' sometimes. Mine have been ok for two years now, except the chest pocket zip which got stuck, so in typical blokish mode I pulled it to hard and now it doesnt work so good!
So I put a drop of chain lube on the zipper and things now work smoothe as you like!
At night they light up like blackpool tower, you can test it yourself with a flash self timer photo...sad I know but i had no friends with cars...

Thanks for the tips! Good to know they are pretty visible at night too as with the dark nights drawing closer I think I'll probably opt for some evening cycling under the cover of darkness

The ethics of businesses who charge what they think they can get away with charging for good kit, by applying what you consider to be an 'excessive mark up', is a completely different issue from the issue which is being discussed here, which I assumed to be whether cycling enthusiasts and people taking up cycling should choose a "bargain" over a decent piece of kit that will do the job well and last.

Even so, who are you to decide what is an 'excessive' mark up? "Excessive" to you might mean to you what you can't afford to pay, but that's a purely subjective viewpoint - 'excessive' from the seller's point of view would be applying a price too high for the market to bear. Something's only worth what somebody's prepared to pay for it.
