My post, "ha ha - ever had the feeling you've been had", wasn't directed at you, specifically, Andy, was at lots. ^_^
That's fair enough. I'll accept my due share though.

There's no contradiction between the two. The fact that kids had the chance to do what they wanted doesn't mean that they would necessarily produce something which lots of other people would have found enjoyable. To produce things on a musical instrument which anybody other than yourself might enjoy requires some sort of technical ability (however minimal). As I said to you, I had nothing against punk but not much of it appealed to me personally. OTH it was good to see it happening in terms of the wider effects it had. If you want to engage in a possibly fruitful discussion, I'd be delighted to join you. If you want to score points that aren't there to be scored, then crack on.

Er... Andy? The fact that punk was so popular - and still is popular - rather suggests quite a lot of people did enjoy it. The whole point about it was that it wasn't just a bunch of musicians indulging in overly complicated, overly long solos to demonstrate how good they were. Punk was something that you listened to and thought "F***, I could do that". And so many did. Yes, most of it was dross. Just as most of what came before was dross, and most of what came after was dross. Even the very best started out very rough round the edges: the early stuff by the Banshees, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, the Cure are all rather rough. But who cares? They improved things. Just about everything I have, from ABC to Xymox is punk, post punk or influenced by punk. Thank **** for punk.
Strange that one of the best punk bands on the UK scene were Aussies with long hair.

Rest of the stuff on tonight's show was still unbelievably ****e, though.
Just been digging through my small singles collection - some real gems amongst them in including SAHB's Boston Tea Party and:
Be Bop Deluxe
The Damned
Stranglers
Scritti Politti
Eddie and Hot Rods
The Gorillas
Early Billy Brag - I don't care for his later stuff
