My dear friends, Rightmove has given me the definitive answer to my question.

I just discovered that Rightmove website has a new search facility. You enter the post code of where you work, how you would like to get there, how many bedrooms you require and your price range etc. Then the website tells you areas where can find houses.
My search came up with no matching properties.

I feel your pain
I have found then when I put in I want to walk to work in Belgravia, want a 6 bedroom property with swimming pool, Zoopla simply comes up with 'none found'.
Do you think I need to increase my purchase price to six figures ?

When buying property, you need to be very very flexible.
Budget always trumps location and specification

I said, I want to get to office in Leatherhead in 30 minutes by car, need just two bedrooms and with a price under 2K.
I think that is a reasonable requirement.

In London, I think that would be n-2 bedrooms, n-2 gardens, n-1 garages, and price + £400k!

This ruin where I though they were taking the pis* and asking £775,000 for a property that does not even have plumbing for a bathroom and needs major rebuilding went for above the asking price!.

The builder is starting at £200K to simply make it habitable.
Add another £30K for decoration, carpets and curtains
The builder started last week, they are hoping to move in by Christmas!

Assuming you mean under 200k? Or under 2k a month rent?

You'll be lucky to buy 2 beds anywhere these days in Surrey for under 250-300k, maybe on a major road above / a shop / maybe ex council. Problem is traffic in North East Surrey is horrible. It'll take you 30 minutes or more from Epsom to Leatherhead in the rush hour (5 miles?)
Sutton used to be a bit cheaper. Leatherhead is around 30 mins by train when (if) southern are running, be closer to an hour by car.

Redhill in the other direction used to be less expensive (desirable) as the links to London aren't as good

Things have gone utterly bonkers around here in the last 3-5 years

^_^

£2K per month ?
or
£2m purchase ?
Both are do-able in that area

£200k as you have found in the south east will buy very little indeed, and not even a studio flat within the M25

Haha. We looked at Halstow road nine years ago. Greenwich and blackheath are nice areas, but you must be desperate to stay to buy a family home there.

Sorry, I meant under 200K
I am going to have a conversation with them. If there is any chance of getting a higher salary, I will go for it.

Blimey!

My sister bought a 3-bedroomed semi here and did it up for a total of about £85,000. It has a sun-trap rear garden directly overlooking a stunning hillside towering 700 ft higher, with flocks of sheep dotted about. It has a decent-sized front garden. There are views of another hillside from the front bedroom of the house. It has a large brick-built storeroom built onto the side return. No problem with parking outside the house. A 5 minute drive or a brisk 20 minute walk to the railway station with direct links to Manchester and Leeds. Local cycling and walks are great, but even better are available in the nearby Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland. Travel a bit further to the Peak District or the North Yorkshire moors. Apart from that, it was a total rip-off!

I bought a house in Oxfordshire but it's surrounded by d***head neighbours. Definitely looking to move up north, at least if the neighbours are d***heads then I won't be able to understand what they are saying.
