Why would you move to South?

Yeah well there are some big boats out there and we haven't quite got the Dover to Calais cycle path sorted yet.
I quite like Hyde Park Corner for a flush of adrenaline, but crossing the shipping Traffic Separation Scheme mid-Channel is going to be an absolute blast on your "bike". Let us know how it goes.:okay:

I did the opposite. I moved to North Wales from Sussex 35 years ago and never regretted it. My children are the same, although they were very young then, they have no wish to move back south. So much nicer up there. Better scenery, nicer people, cleaner air, cheaper cost of housing. If I want warmer climate, a cheap 2 hour flight will take me there, as opposed to hours in the car driving down south.

I went down to rural Wiltshire a while back on a search and rescue training course. Very rural, very unmessed, very beautiful. Nice to see there are still some lovely areas doon sooth that aren't a national park. North and South downs also very pretty. Not all doom and gloom.

Moving west is something we are seriously considering doing.
I moved from S.West to S.East in my late teens

Much as I love Cornwall, have parent and sisters there, my brother and I would never move back for the reason we moved up in the first place.
No opportunity.

We sat aged about 14 and said if you want to live in Cornwall then you can either be a fisherman, a waiter, a farmer or work for the Government in some capacity, OK, so it was a bit of a sweeping generalisation, but now 40+ years later I'd still say broadly correct.
(Other than the Cornish fishing industry has followed mining and now hardly employs anyone)
My brother and I made a success of our lives, my sisters who stayed in Cornwall did not.

That's pretty much the stock answer to why anyone moves from the sticks to the smoke. I was a bit of an industrial gypsy, travelling round the usual oil industry sites before making the inevitable step to go offshore. I enjoyed that, but didn't like what my future looked like when I scanned the tea shack on day 1 of a trip, so set up my own firm. All well and good, until it became all consuming with no prospect of any real alternative. Eventually, I saw the light and moved to a new area where opportunities were more abundant, and nearly 3 years in, I haven't looked back.

It is 2 worlds, running a business in Leeds but with a London link, l couldn't give work away, l'd pass on leads to guys who just couldn't be arsed to get out of bed for £500 a day. The hassle of moving around and the probability of a better earner used to drive me nuts.

Still, l have plenty of disposable income in Yorkshire, l wouldn't have in the South.

Funny you should make that point, we really struggle to get tradesmen in this area, 5 guys have so far quoted and their prices accepted for roof work, not have come back and done the job. Two plumbers quoted for boiler job the same, two electricians likewise. I get calls everyday from customers who have been let down by other dent companies.

We have struggled here too!

Tradesmen not answering messages left on voicemail, emails, texts ... Eventually getting people to turn out and give quotes, quotes accepted, then they don't show up to actually do the work. In one memorable case, after a lot of chasing, the man did eventually turn up, did the work but has not invoiced for it! The only explanation that I can think of is that they are all still rushed off their feet working on repairs to the hundreds of local properties damaged in the 2015 Boxing Day floods.

It's not unusual where I used live, to be invoiced a full 12 months after doing the job.

My dear friends, Rightmove has given me the definitive answer to my question.

I just discovered that Rightmove website has a new search facility. You enter the post code of where you work, how you would like to get there, how many bedrooms you require and your price range etc. Then the website tells you areas where can find houses.
My search came up with no matching properties.

How do businesses make a profit working like that? It can be hard enough getting people to cough up even when they are invoiced promptly!
Don't ask me, I could never understand it. I invoiced weekly, but others did what suited them.

There is no ideal property, you need to be flexible on one or more factors if you truly wish to buy a property.
