When I had vintage motorcycles, I used to ride them to various shows all over the region. Although no vehicle tax was payable, it was and is a legal requirement to display a free tax disc in order to prove insurance is held.

At these shows, there are always a number of self-appointed "experts" who try to find the slightest error in a restoration, such as a wrong colour or incorrect part. One such 'erbert button-holed me at a vintage show when I was displaying my lovely old 1919 AJS V-twin.

"You've not done a bad job of that" says he.
"Thanks", said I, "do you restore vehicles yourself?"
"No, I can't be bothered with all that."
"Do you own an old bike then?"
"No, but you've ruined that bike."
"Sorry, ruined it? How so?"
"You've put a tax disc on it."

"Er thanks" says I, "I'll try to do better in future."
He ambled off still mumbling about how restorers "ruin old bikes these days", etc.
