her engagement ring. And she's well upset. I can't see what all the fuss is about, she's had it for ages. Shall I go and get her a new 'un?
Let's take it further: she's having affair, and she subconsciously lost it because the marriage is over in her heart. If it was that important to her she would never have lost it.

Just kidding! But seriously @fatblokish, do you really not understand? That is object larded with symbolism and emotion. When she accepted it from you - or picked it - she was quietly agreeing to wear it all her life and for her it symbolises your union. I think it's brilliant that you don't care - keep not caring - but try to understand why she does and accept it as the compliment to you that it is.
Do you have no objects in your life that would break your heart to lose? That's admiral and logical if it's true, but most humans have objects that are more important to them than a logician could understand.
(Personally, I don't really get engagement/wedding rings. I never got married for other reasons, but if I did, I would have found an alternative to rings to symbolise the union)
I know my wife would be devastated if she lost hers and so would I. Not long after we married, I was back on a rig and not long after a comfort break, I pulled off my glove to the horror of no ring. Panic ensued as I was working on the spider deck which was floored with Kennedy grating which probably meant it was in the big blue skip. I searched for hours before I finally pulled off my other glove to reveal that after washing my hands I put the ring back on the wrong hand.Let's take it further: she's having affair, and she subconsciously lost it because the marriage is over in her heart.

Not all of us. I don't have an engagement ring and didn't get a wedding ring until our 5th anniversary. She'll probably want a much better/ more expensive one as a replacement. All the married women I know have engagement rings worth a few grand.
Can you make a claim on the house insurance?
