Just jumping in on the Chinese s here. The main difference with certain items leaving China is the quality control (anyone remember the cheap steel fiasco). Every now and then China undercuts the specialist chemical manufacturing market by such a margin that they sell products for less than the raw materials we import. However they (so far) never keep up the quality control which is vital in this market.

Is this thread still about Wiggle or are we just doing the usual expensive-bikes-are-rubbish schtick? 🥱

Anyway, the administrators announced over 100 job losses a few days ago. Over half are in Portsmouth, which I think is where they run the IT side of things. Hope they’re all able to find something else soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if I see a few CVs from ex-wigglers in the coming weeks.

Because Wiggle/Chain Reaction has folded......
It was however not an impressively fast fold and it is unclear how long unfolding will take (and if it will be successful at all). Definitively not something do do every day in a hurry on the way to work.
I'll get my coat!
I grabbed mine as well.

Placed a small order yesterday. Email this morning saying the order is on its way. Could have ordered more but a lot of items out of stock.

Assume the Administrators will run it down for cash until the end or someone buys the brands.

Update: Everything arrived and quickly. Just stick to whatever they have in stock and avoid back orders. If you must order, use a Credit Card for anything over £100 as you'll be covered in case anything goes wrong.

Brands like Giant and Merida are Taiwanese with very high quality control standards especially in the Taiwanese factories. Yes they have mainland Chinese factories but they own them completely and have Taiwanese QC standards. The issue with US and European brands/importers is they often use cheaper factories and will change factories regularly to get a better price. These could be in mainland China or in Vietnam, Cambodia and many other countries where the quality isn't quite as good. Trying to connect this back to the Wiggle/CRC situation many of their bikes have been made by Insera Sena in Indonesia (Polygon/Marin) and they have also made many bikes for much more expensive brands, Kona, Scott, Saracen as well as shop brands like Halford's Carrera, Voodoo and Boardman plus Go Outdoor brands. It's not hard to see pretty much the same bike at wildly different price points but Kona or Scott models probably have a lot more prestige and are higher up the pecking order but there might be a month's wages in difference when buying.

I’d not even thought of that. LOL.

No, just I hang out here mainly as my folder is the bike I ride most often.

Why is this in folding bikes section ?

As above...

Posted here as this is the sub-forum I use most often.

Didn't think to post it elsewhere as I've never ventured out of it.

R+D and marketing and warranty I guess.

Look at Ribble they have moved upmarket and are a competitor to canyon and cervelo etc.

Brands can move upmarket in consumers perception but in reality there is a product where the quality may vary hugely. You may have one brand that buys from many different factories and each factory will be at a different quality level. I just watched this video and the quality of the Cannondale frame is garbage, I mean real garbage and not fit for purpose and dangerous to be honest. I remember when Cannondale were jokingly called 'Crack'n'fail' because so many of their frames failed and then they moved production out of the USA to somewhere like Taiwan and the quality was brilliant but then Taiwan got expensive and they looked for cheaper factories. Call me mad but I prefer buying from bicycle manufacturers rather than bicycle brands and if I do buy from a brand I want to know the factory used if possible so I can judge likely quality.
